
Football Mourns Loss of Former Captain

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers football mourns the passing of former captain Jamil Merrell, a defensive lineman for the Scarlet Knights from 2009-13. Merrell was 36.
A native of Newark, Delaware, Merrell appeared in 34 career games with 18 starts over four seasons. He amassed 81 tackles, 8.5 sacks, 16 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and four pass breakups. In his senior season, Merrell was voted team captain along with his twin brother Jamal, a linebacker, quarterback Gary Nova and wide receiver Brandon Coleman.
Merrell signed with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent following his college career. He also played professionally in the Arena Football League. Merrell was an assistant coach at Red Lion Chrisitan Academy in Bear, Delaware.
