Katie Coons joined the Rutgers Rowing staff as an assistant coach in July 2016. Coons will work with walk-on novices in the fall season, and coaching the varsity fours in the spring. She comes to Rutgers from Upper Arlington, Ohio, where she coached the Upper Arlington High School girls crew team for three years. Coons worked with both the novices and the varsity girls, taking boats to nationals each spring.
During 2013-14, Coons left Arlington to serve as the volunteer coach at Ohio State University. Katie helped the Buckeyes in the second novice eight to a third-place finish at the Big Ten Conference Championship in 2014.
Coons started rowing in 2004 at Upper Arlington and continued her career at Ohio State from 2008-2012, winning a Big Ten title in 2011 and 2012. Coons captured an NCAA Championship in the spare pair in 2012.
Majoring in human development and family science at Ohio State, Coons went on to complete her Intervention Specialist License from Capital University. She became a member of Pi Lambda Theta, the National Education Honors Society in 2014 shortly after starting at Capital.
