Shields Lifts Rutgers Past West Virginia, 74-53

In bouncing back from Sunday's loss at Boston College, Rutgers (16-9, 7-7) moved ahead of WVU into a seventh-place tie in the Big East.
The Scarlet Knights, who are off until Wednesday at Virginia Tech , improved to 13-1 at home on the season and are 38-9 at home in three seasons under head coach Gary Waters.
The Scarlet Knights moved the ball crisply on offense all game long as Rutgers had 20 assists on 27 made baskets. Defensively, Rutgers was alert and active all evening and owned a 30-24 edge in the rebounding department. In addition, the Scarlet Knights shot 15-of-17 (88.2%) from the free throw line.
Sophomore center Adrian Hill added 11 points for the Scarlet Knights, who shot 52.9 percent, while senior forward Herve Lamizana had 10 points, five assists, six rebounds and two blocks. Freshman guard Quincy Douby had 10 points and six assists while junior guard Juel Wiggan tossed in eight points, six rebounds and five assists.
Patrick Beilein led WVU with 16 points while D'or Fischer had 14 points.
Trailing 14-9, the Scarlet Knights outscored West Virginia 25-7 over the final 10:12 of the first half. The Mountaineers shot 3-for-17 during that span after making six of their first 11 shots.
Shields scored 10 points in a 15-2 run that gave Rutgers a 24-16 advantage. Four of his points came in transition off Lamizana blocks and two came off his own steal and layup.
West Virginia closed to within 24-21 before Rutgers scored eight straight over the final 4:25 to open a 13-point halftime lead. The Knights shot 50 percent in the opening stanza while WVU hit just 32.1 percent.
The Knights continued to build on their lead after intermission, opening their largest advantage at 62-36. At one point, West Virginia made five of six shots but could get no closer than 51-36.

WITH THE WIN
Tonight's 74-53 win over West Virginia improves Rutgers
to 16-9 overall and 7-7 in the BIG EAST. The Scarlet Knights also improve to
13-1 (.928) at
home and have won the last three games at the Louis Brown Athletic Center by
an average of 34.6 points. In the Gary Waters era, Rutgers is 38-9 (.808) at
the RAC.
SHIELDS MOVES UP CAREER CHARTS
Junior guard Ricky Shields continued to move
up in the Rutgers career record books. He passed Gene Armstead (1970-73) and
Damon Santiago (1991-1996) for
29th place on the career scoring list, and now has 1,069 career points. Shields
in 26 points shy of catching Steve Worthy (1991-93) with 1,095 points.
Shields also climbed up the single season three-point shooting charts. He now has 71 threes on the season, which is the seventh highest in single-season history. Shields is one three-pointer shy of catching Jerome Colman and Donnell Lumpkin. His 174 career three-point field goals made is the fourth highest in school history.
