Douby Leads Rutgers Past Temple, 76-71

PISCATAWAY, N.J - Freshman guard Quincy Douby scored a career-high 28 points in his first career start and Rutgers rallied from an eight-point, second-half deficit to defeat Temple 76-71 in the first round of the NIT on Wednesday night.
Rutgers (17-12) will face the winner of an opening-round game between Rhode Island (20-13) and West Virginia (16-13) at a date to be determined.
Rhode Island beat Boston University 80-52 and West Virginia defeated Kent State 65-54 in play-in games also on Wednesday.
Owls coach John Chaney was hit with a technical foul with 5:23 to play and his team down 64-58.
Douby hit both free throws to push the lead to eight. Freshman guard Marquis Webb hit a jumper to give Rutgers a 10-point lead. Temple (15-14) never got close until the final seconds.
David Hawkins, the nation's fourth leading scorer with a 24.4 average, had 25 in the final game of his career. Mardy Collins added 22.
Junior guard Ricky Shields added 14 points for the Scarlet Knights, to go with a career-high eight assists and eight rebounds. Senior forward Herve Lamizana had 13 and Webb finished with 10.
Douby broke a 54-54 tie and ignited a 10-3 spurt with a 3-pointer. Shields followed that with a layup for a 59-54 lead.
After Tyreek Byard hit a 3-pointer for Temple, Lamizana made two free throws and junior Juel Wiggan hit a 3-pointer for a 64-57 lead.
Douby hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points in a 16-2 spurt that rallied the Scarlet Knights to a 50-44 lead.
Hawkins got the Owls right back in the game, hitting a baseline jumper and a 3-pointer to ignite a 10-4 run. Collins' 3-pointer tied the game at 54 with 8:54 to play.

WITH THE WIN
With tonight's 76-71 victory over Temple in the first round of the NIT,
the Scarlet Knights improve to 17-12 overall for the season. The win evens
RU's all-time record in the postseason tournament to 12-12. It is the
seventh time in 13 NIT appearances the Scarlet Knights were victories in their
first game.
DOUBY HAS CAREER NIGHT IN FIRST CAREER START
Freshman guard Quincy Douby set
career highs in five statistical categories tonight while recording his first
career start. Douby has played in every game
this season, averaging 23.2 minutes per outing. He has made a first-half appearance
in each game, seeing his earliest action off the bench in RU's previous
game against Virginia Tech in the BIG EAST Tournament, entering the contest
at the 17:32 mark of the first half.

Douby drilled a three-pointer with 8:36 left in the second half, eclipsing
his career highs in points (26) three-pointers (6) in a game on the play. He
ended the night with career highs in points (28), three-pointers made (6),
three-pointers attempted (11), minutes (38) and free throws made (8). He also
finished a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line.
DOUBY VS. TEMPLE
Against Temple tonight, Quincy Douby scored a career-high
28 points. He recorded his first career 20-point game in his initial outing
against the Owls on Dec.
3, netting 21 points. In two games against Temple, Douby has scored a combined
49 points. Two of his three-career 20-point games have come against the Owls.
The other was a then-career-high 24-point output against Notre Dame (1/31).
TURNOVERS DOWN
Rutgers committed just nine turnovers against Temple, marking
the seventh time this season Rutgers has committed less than 10 turnovers in
a game. Additionally,
the three Rutgers freshmen - Quincy Douby, Marquis Webb and Byron Joynes - did
not record a turnover in a combined 66 minutes of play.
RU HOSTS TEMPLE TWICE IN THE SAME SEASON FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 1985
Tonight
marked the second meeting this season between Rutgers and Temple at the RAC.
In their previous encounter this season, Rutgers defeated the Owls,
77-67, on Dec.3, 2003. The last time both schools met on the Scarlet Knights' home
floor more than once in the same season was 1985 when the Owls traveled to
Piscataway on Jan. 19 and returned to the RAC for the Atlantic 10 Tournament
on March 8.
WE MEET AGAIN
The last time the Scarlet Knights played a non-conference opponent
twice in the same season occurred during the 2000-01 campaign when RU faced
Princeton
on Dec. 14, 2000 in Princeton and saw the Tigers less than two weeks later
in the ECAC Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 27. Rutgers won
both games.
TRAILING AT HALFTIME???... NO PROBLEM
For only the sixth time in 16 games
at the RAC this season, Rutgers entered halftime with a deficit on the scoreboard.
The Scarlet Knights trailed the
Owls, 37-31 at the half tonight. In five of the six contests, Rutgers has pulled
out the victory. Rutgers owns a 14-2 record at home this season.

SHIELDS SETS CAREER HIGH WITH EIGHT ASSISTS
Junior Ricky Shields had eight
assists tonight for Rutgers, eclipsing his previous career high of seven against
Syracuse on Feb. 2, 2002.
NON CONFERENCE DOMINATION
With the victory over Temple tonight, Rutgers improved
its 2003-04 non-conference record to 10-2. The mark matches the 1998-99 squad.
SCARLET KNIGHTS CONVERT FROM THE LINE
Rutgers finished 20-of-24 (.833) from
the line tonight, marking the 10th time in 29 games this season, Rutgers has
shot 80 percent or better from the free
throw line and the 14th time RU has shot 75 percent or better from the charity
stripe.
RUTGERS SHOTS 51 PERCENT FROM THE FLOOR
For the sixth time this season, Rutgers
shot 50 percent from the floor. The Scarlet Knights finished 23-of-45 (.511)
tonight. RU owns a perfect 6-0 record

RU CONNECTS FROM DOWNTOWN
Rutgers shot 10-for-21 (.476) from beyond the three-point
arc tonight. The mark matches the Scarlet Knights' the sixth-highest
three-point percentage of the season. With 10 three-pointers tonight, Rutgers

season, four shy of the all-time record of 216 set during the 1989-90 season.
Rutgers is 8-1 on the season when it has made 10 or more three-pointers in
