Douby Sparks Rutgers Past Providence, 72-67
Jan 19 | Men's Basketball
Douby scored seven points in the final three minutes for Rutgers (7-7, 1-3) as the Scarlet Knights went 7-for-10 from the free throw line in the final minute to secure the victory.
The Rutgers defense forced Providence into 15 turnovers, including three in the final minutes of the contest. The Scarlet Knights forced a turnover by Providence All-American Ryan Gomes, and a quick Friar foul led to a pair of Douby free throws on the other end. RU's full court press then forced a Friar turnover on the inbounds pass leading to Douby's three. Gomes was held to 14 points on 6-of-18 (.333) shooting. The defensive effort on Gomes, which was led by sophomore guard Marquis Webb (Paterson, NJ), also limited Gomes to a 1-for-6 shooting night from three-point range.
Senior guard Ricky Shields (Upper Marlboro, MD) finished with 14 points, while freshman forward Olle Bailey (Chicago, IL) posted his second career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. In addition to his stellar defense, Webb finished with a productive eight-rebound, six assist night.
After falling behind by as many as nine in the first half, Rutgers surged back, tying the game on a three-pointer by Shields with 7:21 to go in the opening half. The Scarlet Knights executed text-book end-to-end basketball to take their biggest lead of the first half at 34-30. Bailey dove to the floor for a rebound, quickly kicking it up court to Webb, who dished it over halfcourt to Shields. The senior guard alertly fired a pass to a wide-open Juel Wiggan (Bronx, NY) for the fast break layup. Wiggan put the Scarlet Knights on top at the half with a 10-foot jumper to make it 36-35 at the break. Wiggan turned in another consistent effort, with nine points, five assists, two steals and 0 turnovers.
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Saturday, traveling to the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford to take on in-state rival Seton Hall at noon.
