#18 Connecticut Powers Past Rutgers, 85-63

PISCATAWAY, NJ -- Charlie Villanueva and Josh Boone each scored 21 points and No. 18 Connecticut used an early 26-5 run and went on to defeat Rutgers 85-63 on Saturday night in front of a capacity crowd of 8,011 at the RAC.
Denham Brown added 18 points and Connecticut hit eight 3-pointers defeating Rutgers (8-15, 2-11 Big East).
Marcus Williams added 11 points, Rudy Gay had 10 and Villanueva had 11 rebounds for the Huskies (17-6, 9-3) won for the fifth time in six games.
Sophomore guard Marquis Webb had 15 points and freshman guard Manny Quezada added 12 for the Scarlet Knights. After shooting just 27.8% in the first half, the Scarlet Knights converted on 15-of-28 second half shots, good for 53.6%.
Brown, Gay, Villanueva and Boone combined for 23 points in the 26-5 run that gave the Huskies a 37-13 lead with 3:49 to play in the first half.
The spurt ended with a three-point play by Villanueva. The Scarlet Knights thenreturned to the floor and played their best basketball. They got their transition game going and scored the next 12 points, with Quincy Douby converting a three-point play with 1:32 to go to get the Scarlet Knights within 37-25.
Villanueva hit four straight free throws and Boone converted a late three-point play to give the Huskies a 44-25 halftime lead.
Connecticut put the game away in the opening minutes of the second half with a 15-4 spurt that featured five points apiece from Brown and Williams,
Rutgers is next in action on Wednesday when they play host to Division II Arkansas-Monticello.
POSTGAME NOTES
FILLING THE SEATS
The sellout-crowd of 8,011 vs. Connecticut marked the sixth sellout of the season (second in three games), the 20th in the four-year Gary Waters era and the 55th in the history of the RAC.
QUEZADA SHINES
Freshman guard Manny Quezada made the most of his playing time against Connecticut, posting career highs in three-point field goals made (2), assists (5), field goals attempted (8) and minutes (21), while scoring 12 points.
WEBB GETS OFFENSIVE
Marquis Webb filled up the stat sheet against Connecticut on Saturday, marking his second stellar effort against the Huskies in as many games. He matched his career high in field goals made (5), three-point field goals made (3), three-point field goals attempted (6) and bested his career high in field goals attempted (11). In two games this season against Connecticut, Webb averaged 15.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per contest.

RU, which leads the BIG EAST in free throw shooting (.766) in league competition, converted 7-of-9 (.778) of its free throw attempts against Connecticut. Over the last 10 games, RU has converted 141-of-183 (.770) of its free throws.
JOYNES SHOWS PRESENCE
Sophomore center Byron Joynes matched his career high with three blocks against Connecticut. It marked the second-straight game he has achieved the total. He leads the team with 21 blocks this season.
SHIELDS TIED FOR 16TH ON RUTGERS SINGLE-SEASON THREE-POINT LIST
With his total tonight, Ricky Shields moved into a tie for 16th place on the Rutgers single-season three-point field goals list with 54. His total of 93 last season is currently second on the list, while his sophomore-year total of 59 ranks 15th. His total of 161 three-point field goals this season is tied for 12th on the Rutgers single list.
BAILEY CLEANING THE GLASS
Freshman forward Ollie Bailey posted a team-high seven rebounds against the Huskies, marking the third time in the past four games he has achieved the total. He is averaging 6.0 rebounds in his last six games.
