Rutgers Falls to Providence in BIG EAST Action, 79-69
Jan 25 | Men's Basketball
PISCATAWAY, NJ - Hot-shooting Providence ran out to a 44-26 halftime lead and weathered a Rutgers rally that drew the Scarlet Knights to within seven points. But the Friars executed down the stretch to earn a 79-69 win on Wednesday night at the RAC.
Rutgers had four players score in double figures, but could not overcome a team Providence team that connected on 60 percent of its field goals. ??
Donnie McGrath scored a game-high 23 points on 5-of-7 shooting from three-point range and Herbert Hill came off the bench for 19 as Providence made 27-of-45 field goals, hit seven three-pointers and was 18-of-25 from the free throw line.?? Despite that, Rutgers had opportunities in the second half to overcome the 18-point halftime deficit, cutting the lead to single digits on six occasions.??
?? Junior guard Quincy Douby had 14 of his 18 points in the second half and also handed out four assists on the evening.?? Junior center Byron Joynes registered a 'double-double' with 10 points and 13 rebounds (nine offensive) in just 24 minutes.?? Junior swingman Marquis Webb (12 points, four assists) and freshman forward JR Inman (13 points, four rebounds, four assists, three blocks) were RU's other double-figure scorers.
Leading 33-23, the Friars ran off 11 straight, with Sharaud Curry scoring seven points on consecutive possessions. He hit a 3-pointer, then came back to hit another 3-pointer and was fouled in the act of shooting. He the made the free throw to convert a four-point play. The run was completed when Douby blocked a layup attempt by Curry, only to have the ball end up in the hands of Hill for a slam.
The Scarlet Knights climbed back after intermission, closing within 47-39 when a technical on the Providence bench led to two Douby foul shots and a Joynes putback. The Friars responded with a 17-5 run, with Hill scoring six straight Providence points in the midst of the run.
Rutgers' defense was able to force 17 Providence turnovers, turning those miscues into 23 points.?? The Scarlet Knights also blocked seven shots, including three by Inman, two by Joynes and two by Douby.
Rutgers was without the services of junior forward Adrian Hill, who aggravated his surgically-repaired left knee vs. Pittsburgh, and has now missed two consecutive games.
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Saturday, Jan. 28, when they play host to No. 21 Louisville at the RAC.?? Tip-off is at 2:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.
