STORRS, Conn. - Rutgers women's soccer extended its BIG EAST unbeaten streak to three games with a 0-0 tie against No. 16 ranked Connecticut, ending the Huskies' six game winning streak.
"We played very well," said head coach Glenn Crooks. "We had opportunities to win the match, but so did they. I thought it was a high level soccer match between two very good teams, and I am very happy with the way we performed on the road against a team of that caliber. I am glad we picked up a point, although we would rather have three, but we will take the one for now."
The Scarlet Knights (6-4-2, 1-1-2) were led by sophomore goalie Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.), who had a stellar game with nine saves.
"Erin came up very big when we needed it," said Crooks. "She had an exceptional game, not only making saves, but also her distribution of the ball, her command of the box, all the different types of things she had to handle. Overall it was her best match of the year."
UConn (7-2-1, 3-0-1) was shutout for the first time in six games, and for the third time this season. The Huskies came into tonight's match having scored 12 goals in three BIG EAST games, but thanks to outstanding defense from the Scarlet Knights, the Huskies were unable to get the ball in the net.
RU continues its BIG EAST play when they travel to face Providence on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Friars fell to Seton Hall 2-0 on Friday night, and currently stand at 1-9-1, 0-3-0 in the BIG EAST.
"We have to take care of Providence," said Crooks. "They are a pretty good squad and the match is on the road, and every game is so critical in the conference. We want to finish at a high level, so we have to take each game every seriously from here on out."
