Renkart Named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers senior football player Brandon Renkart (Piscataway, N.J.) was named a Second Team Academic All-American by ESPN The Magazine.
Renkart was named in October as a finalist for the Draddy Trophy, which recognizes athletic accomplishments, academic honors and community service. He finished the regular season as Rutgers' fourth-leading tackler with 64 stops, including 6.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.
The senior captain owns a 3.702 cumulative GPA in Civil Engineering. Renkart is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma National Athletic Fraternity as well as the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society. The two-time All-BIG EAST Academic Team selection has registered Dean's List recognition seven of his eight semesters, and currently ranks fourth in his class in Civil Engineering.
A former walk-on, Renkart worked his way through the Rutgers football program to become a two-year starter for the Scarlet Knights. He was also voted by his teammates as a member of the team's leadership council.
He became the first Scarlet Knight to receive ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American honors since Nate Jones, who was a member of the team in 2002 and 2003. Jones is currently a member of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys.
The Piscataway native has also been the recipient of the Rutgers Scholar-Athlete Award, an honor given annually to the top student-athlete on the Rutgers football team.
Renkart is one of four BIG EAST players to earn academic All-American honors.
Rutgers ended its regular season 7-5 overall and 3-4 in the BIG EAST Conference. The Scarlet Knights have accepted an invitation to the International on Jan. 5, 2008 in Toronto, Ontario.
