PISCATAWAY, N.J. (November 25, 2008) – Rutgers head women’s gymnastics coach Chrystal Chollet-Norton announced the signing of three scholastic standouts to National Letters of Intent Tuesday.
The 2009 recruiting class includes Nicole Romano (Livingston, N.J.), Emma-Rose Trentacosti (Ridgefield Park, N.J.) and Jayne Jeffreys (Howell, N.J.).
“The coaching staff is really excited on the signing of these three great New Jersey gymnasts,” Chollet-Norton said. “We are also pleased that we were able to keep some of our best gymnasts in state to compete at Rutgers University. Our program is taking the next step and these girls will be a part of our success.”
Romano is a four-year level 10 competitor and a three-year New Jersey state level 10 qualifier. She trains with North Stars Academy where she finished fourth in the all-around as a sophomore and seventh as a junior. Romano is also a three-year level 10 regional qualifier where she finished eighth in the all-around and fifth in the floor exercise as a junior. The Livingston High School product served as an alternate in the USAG national event last season.
“Nicole is an outstanding tumbler and vaulter who will make an immediate impact for us,” Chollet-Norton said. “She is also a great all-around competitor who should give us the extra depth in that event. We are excited to have Nicole as a member of the 2009 recruiting class.”
Trentacosti is a four-year competitor and a three-year New Jersey state qualifier at level 10, training at Gymnastika. She placed fourth in the all-around as a junior last winter. She is a three-year level 10 regional qualifier. Trentacosti, who attends Ridgefield Memorial High School, finished fourth in the vault and 10th in the all-around in the regionals in 2008.
“Emma-Rose is a great all-arounder who will contribute greatly to our depth in all four events,” Chollet-Norton said. “She is an outstanding vaulter and beam worker who will contribute to our success in those events immediately.”
Jeffreys, who trains at Rebound Gymnastics is a level 10 competitor and USAG Tops National Team member. A level 9 national qualifier, Jeffreys is a three-year level 10 New Jersey State qualifier and a three-year regional qualifier. She placed fourth on the vault and 15th in the all-around in the regionals last winter. Jeffreys attends Abeka Academy.
“Jayne has outstanding uneven bars skills that will make her one of our top bars workers in the future,” Chollet-Norton said. “She will also help the team in the floor exercise and on the balance beam.”
Rutgers opens its 2009 season Jan. 10 in Durham, N.H. against the University of New Hampshire.
