PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers women's gymnastics head coach Chrystal Chollet-Norton has announced the promotion of Mary Peters to Associate Head Coach, effective Sept. 2.
"I am very pleased, both for Mary and four our gymnastics program," said Chollet-Norton. "Mary is an excellent coach and has done an outstanding job the past five years with the team's conditioning and routine composition. She has an outstanding knowledge of the sport of gymnastics. I take very seriously the title of associate [head coach] and during my 32 years of coaching, I have never had anyone I feel merits this title. Mary's hard work and dedication to our program has earned her the distinction to be named associate head coach."
The former Rutgers gymnast enters her sixth season with the program after serving the previous five years as an assistant coach with the Scarlet Knights. Her main responsibilities will be to oversee the beam and floor exercise while coordinating the offseason strength and conditioning program. Peters will also continue to oversee the Scarlet Knights' off-campus recruiting efforts.
Rutgers has enjoyed great success during Peters' time on the coaching staff, with at least 15 victories in three of the last six seasons. RU's 17-6 mark was its best since 2004. She has guided four gymnasts to All-East Atlantic Gymnastics League honors on the beam and three more gymnasts to all-league accolades in the floor exercise since arriving in 2004.
As a gymnast for the Scarlet Knights, Peters was a four-year letterwinner (1991-1994) and was a standout on beam and floor. She received the Rutgers Student-Athlete of the Month Award for Community Service in 1993 and was the team's MVP in 1994.
Peters also works with Devlin Gymnastics in Wall, N.J., as an instructor and coach and is the director of the women's high school Jersey Optional Gymnastics (JOGA) team program. She is also the head coach of the USAG Level 7-10 competitive team program which produced several state champions and individual qualifiers at Level 10. Peters also is a certified member of the National Association of Women's Gymnastics Judges (NAWGJ) and judges levels 4-10.
A January 1995 graduate of Rutgers College, Peters received her degree in psychology with a minor in women's studies. Peters grew up in Pennington, N.J., where she now resides with her husband CJ and their daughter, Julia, and son Rex.
Rutgers will open its season on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009 against New Hampshire in Durham, N.H.
