Rutgers Gymnastics Places Fifth In Lindsey Ferris Invitational

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Rutgers gymnastics team placed fifth in a strong six-team field at the Lindsey Ferris/George Washington Invitational Friday evening inside the Charles E. Smith Center on the campus of George Washington University. The Scarlet Knights posted a score of 186.250, behind East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) foes North Carolina (192.925), George Washington (192.900), Cornell (188.700), Temple (188.500). William & Mary rounded out the field with a 185.100.
Competing without standout junior Laura Sevarino (Cheshire, Conn.), who was sidelined with a foot injury, the Scarlet Knights saw major contributions from its youth.
Freshman Danae Johnson (Silver Spring, Md.) led the Scarlet Knights in both the floor exercise and on the balance beam. She posted a 9.600 on the floor to place fifth and a 9.675 to finish tied for 16th in the strong field of competitors.
Senior Latara Northcutt (Snellville, Ga.), who also competed in the all-around in the Scarlet Knights’ first meet of the season, replaced Sevarino as RU’s all-around competitor on Friday. She recorded a 37.150 in the all-around, she scored a 9.525 in the vault, 9.325 on the floor, 9.225 on the bars and a 9.075 on beam.
On vault, junior Alyssa Lewandowski (Linden, N.J.) and sophomore Kiah Banfield (Newbury Park, Calif.) placed 13th and 15th with scores of 9.575 and 9.550, respectively. The pair led RU to a 47.300 performance in the event.
Rutgers returns home where it will face Penn, William & Mary and George Washington in its 2009 home opener next Saturday, Jan. 24, at 1:00 p.m. inside the Livingston Recreation Center.
