PISCATAWAY, N.J. (November 16, 2009) – The BIG EAST Conference announced Monday that senior CB Devin McCourty (Nanuet, N.Y.) has been named BIG EAST Special Teams Player of the Week. It is the second time in three weeks McCourty has been named the league’s top special teams performer.
In addition, true freshman WR Mohamed Sanu (South Brunswick, N.J.) and junior linebacker Antonio Lowery (Miami, Fla.) were named to the BIG EAST weekly honor roll for their efforts in the 31-0 victory over No. 23 USF.
McCourty continues his spectacular play on defense and special teams and is making a strong push for BIG EAST Special Teams Player of the Year honors. McCourty forced a fumble on punt coverage as the first man down in coverage and also blocked a punt in the shutout victory.
McCourty, one of two players in the nation to block a punt and return a kickoff for a touchdown in 2009, has blocked six career kicks.
Sanu finished with his second career 100-yard receiving game with five receptions for 105 yards and a touchdown in Rutgers’ 31-0 victory over USF. Sanu scored the game’s first touchdown and totaled all 105 yards receiving in the first half. Sanu also scored a two-point conversion in the wildcat formation in the second half. Sanu rushed for times for 13 yards from the wildcat offense.
Lowery was one of several standouts defensively for Rutgers in the Scarlet Knights’ 31-0 victory over USF. Lowery finished with eight tackles, three tackles for loss, a key forced fumble inside RU territory and one sack. The sack ended a USF drive in Rutgers territory in the second half and put the game out of reach for RU.
Rutgers earned its first BIG EAST shutout since 1993 and just the third overall for RU in BIG EAST play. USF was also shutout for the first time in a regular season game in program history.
Rutgers limited USF to seven first downs, 159 yards of total offense and forced four USF turnovers.
The 25th-ranked Scarlet Knights return to action Saturday at Syracuse. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. from the Carrier Dome with live coverage on ESPN360.com.
