Inside the Rutgers-West Virginia Series
West Virginia leads the all-time series 30-4-2. The last time Rutgers won in the series was in 1994 as the Scarlet Knights stopped the Mountaineers 17-12.
Rutgers and West Virginia are meeting for the second time in four seasons in the regular-season finale for both schools. In 2006, West Virginia slipped past Rutgers 41-39 in triple overtime in one of the most memorable games in BIG EAST history.
Saturday's game marks the fourth time Rutgers has hosted West Virginia in its final home game of the season in BIG EAST play. The Scarlet Knights also hosted WVU on Senior Day in 1998, 1996 and 1992 in BIG EAST play.
Coming of Age
For a program that lost six players from last season's team that are on active NFL rosters in 2009, Rutgers has started the season 8-3.
The Scarlet Knights have 20 players on their current two-deep roster with two or more years of eligibility remaining, including eight freshmen. Two true freshmen are in the starting lineup in QB Tom Savage and WR Mohamed Sanu.
Rutgers has just 12 scholarship seniors on the 2009 roster.
Scarlet Grid Notes
Rutgers has allowed the second-fewest trips into the red zone in the nation with 23 ... Only Alabama has allowed less red zone drives with 20 ... Rutgers is 12th nationally and first in the BIG EAST in third-down efficiency defense (32.2 %) ... the Scarlet Knights have yielded just 15.5 first downs per game, the 10th-best figure nationally and tops in the BIG EAST ... Rutgers has allowed just 5.3 yards per punt return in 2009, first in the BIG EAST and 20th in the nation ... Tim Brown leads all active players nationally in career yards per reception (19.6).
