Greg Schiano Quotes - Thursday in St. Petersburg
Dec 17 | Football
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - (December 17, 2009) – The following are quotes from Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano as he met with the media covering the St. Petersburg Bowl:
On ritual of senior players being carried off the field after final practice
“That was neat to see, them getting carried off. As I’ve said to you guys before, this is special. Especially the fifth-year guys, they came here when we had not gone to any bowl games yet and now they’ve been to five straight. A leap of faith on their part so it’s neat to see. It’s cool to be at a place long enough where you have traditions that are long standing. It’s fun to see it passed down.”
On long-time equipment manager Pat Manning being carried off the field by head coach Greg Schiano
“Pat’s a special guy. He kind of retired a couple years ago and then he couldn’t stay away so now he’s going. He’s told me he’s going. He’s only been at practice these last couple but I’ll believe it when I see it. I told him ‘don’t make me do this again.’”
On the key to winning this Saturday
“There are only certain things you can control so I can’t tell you [the keys to winning the game]. The key for us is to play the best we can play. We have to take care of the football number one. When we do that, we’ve been very effective. Number two, we have to tackle well and probably the third thing, we have to protect the quarterback. If we can do those three things, we’ll be able to play good football. Some of that will have an impact on Central Florida but you can’t control them.”
On the Central Florida defensive line
“They’re legitimately very good. I’d put them on the level of Pittsburgh’s group, they’re that good. Those two groups are the best [defensive] lines we’ll have faced all year.”
On possible heightened excitement from Florida players in their home state
“I think being down here is getting heightened excitement out of me, a little warm weather. I think some families are starting to roll in and it’s quickly starting to amp up. We have this [Beach Bash event] today which will be nice and the day before a game it will start getting cranked up a bit.”
On commitment to running the ball
“I hope that we can have balance and mix it up. We’re going to have to mix it up. As good as they are at stopping the run is as good as they are at pressuring the passer. We just can’t let them get into grove because if they do, they’ll probably have twice as many fans there as we will, it will get pretty crazy. We just need to run our offense.”
