Rutgers Falls at Marquette
Jan 27 | Men's Basketball
MILWAUKEE, WISC. - Sophomore guard Mike Rosario (Jersey City, N.J.) scored a game high-tying 16 points and senior center Hamady Ndiaye (Dakar, Senegal) grabbed a contest best-tying 12 rebounds, but it was not enough as Rutgers (9-11, 0-8) suffered a 82-59 loss to Marquette (12-8, 3-5) at the Bradley Center Tuesday evening. The Scarlet Knights were able to reduce a 26-point first half deficit to 14 point after the break in another hard fought defeat.
Three Scarlet Knights scored in double digits. Freshman wing Dane Miler (Henrietta, N.Y.) and redshirt junior forward Jonathan Mitchell (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) scored 14 and 10 points, respectively, to supplement Rosario's highest output since he registered 17 points versus No. 5 Syracuse on Jan. 13.
Ndiaye also added six points and three blocks. The co-captain's three rejections pushes his career total to 306 to move into second place on RU's all-time list, surpassing former Scarlet Knight James Bailey (304).
Five Golden Eagles scored in double digits with Jimmy Butler and Darius Johnson-Odom each tallying 16 points.
Marquette proved why it is the nation's best three-point shooting team, as it opened the game with a 23-7 advantage highlighted by six three pointers. Senior Maurice Acker sank four treys during that stretch.
With Marquette up 27-10, the BIG EAST foes split the next six baskets to put the score at 33-16 before MU caught fire from behind the arc again hitting back-to-back threes to extend its lead to 39-16.
Rosario deposited a three at the 1:42 mark for the final basket of the first stanza as the Golden Eagles entered the locker room at the midpoint with a 44-21 advantage.
The Scarlet Knights stole the momentum at the beginning of the second period as a James Beatty (Wilmington, N.C.) three ignited a 10-2 run to trim Marquette's lead to 46-31. Rutgers hit four of its five shots during that stretch. After being outrebounded by MU 21-12 in the first period, RU continued to hang with MU by pulling down a 13-3 advantage on the boards in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
The Scarlet Knights got to within 14 points on a Jonathan Mitchell (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) three-pointer with 13:25 remaining but would get no closer.
Rutgers returns to the Louis Brown Athletic Center for its next game when it hosts Notre Dame this Saturday. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. The game will be televised live nationally on ESPN2.
