PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 9, 2010) – Rutgers dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 8 Louisville in BIG EAST field hockey action on Saturday at the Bauer Track & Field Complex.
“We gave it our all,” said senior tri-captain Jenna Bull after the game. “It’s unfortunate because we followed the game play precisely and I felt as if we could take it. It is frustrating and obviously the outcome is not what we wanted.”
The Scarlet Knights (4-9, 1-3) drew the game’s first two penalty corners, but could not capitalize on the early opportunity as the first shot attempt was blocked. Junior Kat Rodziewicz (Ocean, N.J.) on the second corner saw her attempt stopped by Cardinals goalkeeper Erin Conrad in the third minute of play.
A breakdown on defense by RU led to the first and ultimate winning-goal from UofL (9-4, 3-1). Nicole Youman swiped an errant pass and sent the ball into the cage from the right side. The ball found the stick of Amber Thomas, who knocked in past Scarlet Knights goalie Sarah Stuby (Roxbury, N.J.) at the 5:26 mark.
The Rutgers defense kept the Cardinals off the board the rest of the first half despite 10 shots in the period by the visitors.
The Scarlet Knights best opportunity to tie the contest came on their third corner when freshman Gia Nappi (Fairfield, N.J.) took the shot off of the stop. Her attempt was blocked, but junior Nicole Gentile (Jamison, Pa.) was in position to tip in the game equalizer only to see it halted at the line by Conrad.
Rutgers drew corners on its next two possessions, but could not find the back of the cage. The Cardinals added an extra score with 17:26 to go on their 11thcorner of the game. Youman fired a hard shot which was directed into the cage by back Jenna Ahern.
The Scarlet Knights host La Salle on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. The contest is part of “Play4 the Cure” initiative to support breast cancer awareness.
