NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (Feb. 17, 2010) – The No. 22 Rutgers wrestling team will host its final home match this Thursday night when it welcomes Drexel to College Ave Gym for a 6 p.m. contest.
Rutgers is currently on a school record 14-match unbeaten streak. The Scarlet Knights (18-4-1) picked up two impressive victories last weekend by defeating Liberty, 39-3, on Friday and American 26-12 on Saturday.
Rutgers owns a 13-0-1 record in 2010 and has not lost a dual match since being edged at then-No. 24 Pittsburgh, 21-18, on Dec. 12, 2009.
The Dragons (11-13) last competed this past Saturday against Rider when they fell by a 27-9 score. Drexel is 11-9 all-time against Rutgers. Last season, RU had its three-match winning streak snapped with a 20-16 loss at Drexel on Feb. 18th.
“This a big match from the standpoint they beat us last year, it’s at home in The Barn, and it’s senior night and we want our four seniors to experience a win on this night,” said Rutgers head coach Scott Goodale.
Prior to the match, four Rutgers seniors – Lamar Brown (Red Bank, N.J.), Jack Barrett (Metuchen, N.J.), Kellen Bradley (Newton, N.J.) and Matthew Rigoglisio (Wayne, N.J.) – will be honored.
Brown, who is currently ranked No. 20 in the NCAA Coaches Panel Rankings, owns a 20-6 overall mark and has won 13 of his 18 dual battles this season.
Barrett has not wrestled since late December due to a medical issue. The Metuchen, N.J. native posted a 10-6 record during the fall season.
“We will have Jack at the match, so that makes it extra special,” said Goodale. “I know our guys will fight hard seeing what Jack went through and then seeing him sitting on the bench for his last match at Rutgers.”
149-pound Bradley owns a 12-8 record this season and has won six of his 10 dual matches.
165-pound Rigoglisio has tallied a 5-5 mark this season including a 3-1 record in dual matches.
Along with Brown, seven other Scarlet Knights are listed in the NCAA Coaches Panel Rankings with 125-pound Joseph Langel (Howell, N.J.), 133-pound Billy Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.), 141-pound Trevor Melde (Hewitt, N.J.), 149-pound David Greenwald (Union, N.J.), 157-pound Daryl Cocozzo (River, Edge, N.J.), 174-pound Daniel Rinaldi (Lodi, N.J.) and heavyweight Dominick Russo (Netcong, N.J.).
Langel is listed at No. 21 and has been dominant in 2010 as he owns a team-best 16-match win streak and hasn’t faltered since falling to Pittsburgh’s Anthony Zanetta on Dec. 12, 2009.
Ashnault is listed as the 21st-best 133-pounder. The first-year Scarlet Knight has tallied a 23-8 record this season, including a 17-4 mark in dual matches. Ashanult has earned 81 dual match points this season, which ranks second on the team.
Melde appeared at No. 24 in the rankings. The RU sophomore has claimed a victory in 10 of his last 12 bouts and has won 17 of his 20 dual matches this season.
Greenwald’s 17-9 record and 10 pins this season has placed him as the 33rd ranked 149-pound grappler.
No. 23-ranked Cocozzo has been one of Rutgers most reliable weapons since joining the dual line up at the start of the spring, as he is on a nine-match winning streak and has won 10 of his 11 dual contests.
Rinaldi is positioned at No. 28 in the rankings. The redshirt freshman owns a 24-7 overall record and has won 17 of his last 20 battles.
10th-ranked Russo leads Rutgers with 27 victories, against only four losses, and has won 19 of his 20 dual bouts. The RU heavyweight is riding a 13-match winning streak.
Following the Drexel match, Rutgers will close out the regular season at No. 7 Lehigh on Saturday at 1 p.m.
