PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 5, 2010) – The Rutgers field hockey team fell to the University of Richmond, 3-2, in a non-conference matchup on Sunday at Bauer Track & Field Complex.
The Scarlet Knights (1-3) scored twice in the final 14 minutes, but it was not enough to overcome the early deficit. The Spiders (3-1), who led 2-0 at intermission, posted an 11-6 shot advantage.
"I thought the last 15 minutes of the second half were great and that is how we need to play all the time,” said head coach Liz Tchou. “You have to be able possess the ball under pressure and they did a good job moving us around and possessing the ball around us. There were patches of time that we were frantic, trying to come up with the ball. The first part of the game and the start of the second half, we didn’t start off strong.”
Richmond jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 8:31 into the game when Dani Pycroft, on the move from right to left, flipped a shot back to her right that found the cage.
With five and a half minutes left in the first half, the Spiders increased their advantage when Katelin Peterson - with just two Knights to beat - went top shelf past her defender and RU goalkeeper Vickie Lavell (Haddon Township, N.J.) to push the lead to 2-0.
The Spiders moved ahead, 3-0, on a penalty corner goal with 15:07 to play. Rutgers settled down late in the second period, recording five of its total six shots in the half.
Senior Jenna Bull (Oakville, Ontario) tallied her first goal of the season, bashing a bullet into the far corner of the cage with 13:38 remaining. Freshman Lisa Patrone (Sewall, N.J.) assisted on the play which commenced off a penalty corner.
The Scarlet Knights tacked on their second score just under 12 minutes later. With a scramble for possession, junior Christie Morad was able to come up with the ball and scoot it across the circle to sophomore Carlie Rouh (Berlin, N.J.). The forward knocked it in the cage form the left side for a one-goal differential. RU could get no closer as UR obtained possession.
“We just needed five or ten more minutes,” Bull said. ‘We need to learn how to come out and play the last 10 minutes (of a game) in the first 10 minutes. We will be harder on ourselves in practice (this week).I think, as a coaching staff we need to look how we are improving every game because we are (improving). Hopefully we will look to get better this week and use it to our advantage next weekend.”
Rutgers hits the road for a pair of games next weekend in College Park, Md. The Scarlet Knights take on American on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m. and face Maryland on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 2 p.m.
