
Rutgers Wrestling Moves Three to Midlands Quarterfinals

EVANSTON, Ill. (December 29, 2011) - The No. 16 Rutgers wrestling team started off strong at the 49th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, winning eleven matches inside Welsh-Ryan Arena during the morning session on Thursday. RU finished the initial session of the tournament in 10th place with 21.5 points and sent three wrestlers into the quarterfinals.
The Scarlet Knights scored bonus-point wins in six of the squad's 11 wins in the first session. Midlands action continues with Session II beginning at 7 p.m. CST.
RU's Mario Mason (Moorestown, N.J.) and Scott Winston (Jackson, N.J.) scored technical fall victories in their first matches of the tournament. Mason won 23-8 (7:00) over Oklahoma's Chase Gordon at 149 pounds. Winston won his match against Lenny Kuspa (Triton) by a score of 18-0 (3:07) at 165 pounds. Mason punched his ticket to the quarterfinal round by winning 10-3 in his match against Lehigh's Anthony Salupo. Winston advanced to the quarterfinals with an 11-6 win over Central Michigan's Mike Ottinger.
Scarlet Knights Billy Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.) at 141 pounds and Daniel Seidenberg (Raritan, N.J.) at 184 pounds both won by decision in the opening round. Ashnault took down Andrew Zobac of North Central College, 11-7, while Seidenberg won 3-0 over Eastern Michigan's Mike Curby. Ashnault advanced to the quarterfinals with a 9-7 win over Mitchell Port of Central Michigan, while Seidenberg fell to the consolation bracket.
Vincent Dellefave (Toms River, N.J.) notched a 13-2 major decision win over Wisconsin's Shane McQuare before bowing out to the consolation bracket of 125 pounds with a medical forfeit. Teammate Michael DeMarco (Lyndhurst, N.J.) followed by recording a 14-2 major decision victory over Ryan Osleeb of Harvard at 133 pounds. After falling into the consolation side, DeMarco won by technical fall over Chicago's Frankie Acosta, 18-2 (6:32) before dropping out of the tournament with a 3-1 sudden victory loss to Andrew Novak of Eastern Michigan.
