
Rutgers Gymnastics Travels To Towson For Friday Tri-Meet

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 10, 2011) - The Rutgers gymnastics team will close its regular-season schedule with a tri-meet against Towson and Yale at the Towson Center in Maryland Friday at 7 p.m.
The Scarlet Knights are coming off a standout performance on Senior Day last Saturday as Rutgers posted the third-highest score in school history with a 194.350 to win a five-meet meet against Cornell, Southern Connecticut State, West Chester and Yale. Rutgers heads into its final regular season meet with a school-record 18 wins, sitting at 18-7 overall. The Scarlet Knights are averaging a 192.360 on the season. Their regional qualifying score in the floor routine of 48.915 is 26th best nationally.
Freshman Luisa Leal-Restrepo (Cali, Colombia) owns the fifth-best regional qualifying score in the nation with a 9.880 in the floor exercise. Her all-around score of 39.025 is tied for 32nd nationally. Leal-Restrepo captured East Atlantic Gymnastics League Rookie of the Week honors on Tuesday after winning the all-around, floor exercise and vault titles and sharing top honors on the bars last Saturday. She posted a 39.300 in the all-around in the event with a career-high tying score of 9.900 in the floor exercise.
Leal-Restrepo is averaging team-best scores in the floor exercise (9.838) and on the vault (9.793). Sophomore Danielle D'Elia (Colts Neck, N.J.) leads the Scarlet Knights on bars with an average score of 9.600. Freshman Alexis Gunzelman (Tabernacle, N.J.) is averaging a team-high 9.546 on the balance beam.
Towson is averaging a team score of 191.722 and is the top-ranked team in the ECAC. Junior Lindsay Poplaski is the Tigers' all-around competitor. As a team, Towson owns a 48.67 regional qualifying score in the floor exercise which ranks sixth best in the NCAA Southeast region.
Rutgers and Yale will meet for the second-consecutive week. Last Saturday, the Bulldogs placed fourth in the five-team meet at Rutgers with a team score of 186.000. Sophomore Stephanie Goldstein is Yale's top all-around competitor. She scored a 37.500 in the all-around last Saturday. As a team, Yale is averaging a 183.088 on the year.
Following Friday's tri-meet, the Scarlet Knights will travel to Washington, D.C. for the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Championships next Saturday at 2 p.m. on the George Washington University campus.
