Rutgers Gymnastics Posts a 192.800 in Loss to UNH

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Jan. 6, 2013) - In its first meet of the season, the Rutgers gymnastics team fell at East Atlantic Gymnastics League opponent New Hampshire, 194.850-192.800, in Durham, N.H., Sunday. The Scarlet Knights' score marked their best to open a campaign since they notched a 193.350 against UNH to start the 2004 season. Five freshmen made their Rutgers debuts.
"Our goal was to start off where we left off last year," said second-year head coach Louis Levine. "We really wanted to make sure that we came in and competed hard right away. We started right away with bars. We have been pushing it hard. If we were going to be the kind of team we wanted to be, that's what needed to improve the most. We went out there and started off with a great bars set. The sky is the limit with this team. This is only the beginning."
The uneven bars proved to be the strongest event for Rutgers, tallying a team score of 48.900 for the third-best mark in the event in program history. The Scarlet Knights' score topped the Wildcats' total of 48.700 in the same event.
Junior Alexis Gunzelman (Tabernacle, N.J.) and freshman Jenna Williams (Bordentown, N.J.) led the charge on the bars, each posting a 9.850 to tie for second place. Senior Danielle D'Elia (Colts Neck, N.J.) recorded a 9.800, while junior Alexandria Ivol (Woolwich Township, N.J.) earned a career-high score of 9.725 on the bars.
D'Elia and Williams each posted a 9.800 or more in two events, as D'Elia matched her bars score with her floor exercise and Williams tallied a 9.800 on the vault, good for second place in the event.
Junior Alyssa Straub (Nazareth, Pa.) competed in every event for the Scarlet Knights, finishing in second place in the all-around competition with a 37.850. Straub set a new career-best on the floor with a 9.800, surpassing her previous high of 9.775, which she totaled on Feb. 4, 2011.
The Scarlet Knights surpassed 48.000 on the bars (48.900), the vault (48.425) and the floor exercise (48.350).
Rutgers is back in action at the Livingston Recreation Center next weekend, hosting Alaska and Yale on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 1 p.m.
