It was the second meeting between the two of the oldest FBS programs. Rutgers leads the nation with 1,296 games played, while Nebraska is fourth with 1,270 in its history. The Scarlet Knights and Huskers previously met at the Polo Grounds in New York City in 1920. Today was the first game for RU in the state of Nebraska.
Rutgers took on a ranked foe in consecutive weeks for the 11th time in its history (No. 13 Ohio State and No. 16 Nebraska), but it was only the second time both games were played on the road. The only other time was in 1993 when RU played at No. 11/9 West Virginia and No. 3/4 Miami back-to-back in 1993.
Gary Nova hit
Leonte Carroo for a 71-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. It was the 11th touchdown for RU on a play starting outside the red zone this season and sixth of more than 50 yards.
Rutgers has made at least one field goal in 14 straight games.
Following a fumble recovery, Rutgers had a touchdown drive of 21 yards in the third quarter. It was the shortest touchdown drive of the season.
The offense scored a touchdown on both of its trips to the red zone.
PLAYER NOTES WR Leonte Carroo Carroo recorded his sixth career 100-yard receiving game and fourth this season with five receptions for 127 yards in the game. He also topped the 100-mark versus Washington State (151), Tulane (140) and Ohio State (100). His sixth 100-yard game is sixth-most in school history, tying Tiquan Underwood.
Carroo now has 775 yards for the season, four short of tying
Marco Battaglia (1994) for 10th in a season in RU history. His 15 career touchdowns are ninth-most in school history, as he has played 18 games at the position in his career.
QB Chris Laviano Laviano played the second half at quarterback and completed 4-of-7 passes to lead the offense to two touchdown drives. He also had 54 yards rushing, including a 46-yard run on his first career carry.
RB Desmon Peoples Peoples scored his third touchdown in the past two games in the third quarter.
RB Robert Martin Martin scored his first career touchdown from four yards out in the fourth quarter. He recorded 32 yards in the game on six carries (5.3 per rush). Martin also notched a career-best 21 reception out of the backfield.
K Kyle Federico Federico connected on a field goal from 41 yards out in the third quarter. It was 28th career field goal, tying him with John Benestad (1990-93) for seventh in school history. He has made four field goals from at least 40 yards this season.
LB Steve Longa Longa led Rutgers with 10 tackles in the game. It was his ninth career game with double-digit stops.
DB Anthony Cioffi Cioffi recorded his first career interception in the first half. He also had a season-high four tackles.
QB Gary Nova Nova completed eight passes in the game to move into third in school history with 620.
With the 71-yard touchdown pass to Carroo, Nova now has 12 passing scores in the career of at least 60 yards. Nova did not play in the second half due to injury.
DL Quanzell Lambert Lambert recovered his second fumble of the season in the third quarter. The recovery led to a 21-yard touchdown drive by the offense.
DL Daryl Stephenson Stephenson made his first career start in the game. It was his 22nd appearance overall for Rutgers.
