PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Six members of the Rutgers wrestling team were ranked in this week's set of national polls. Redshirt junior Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) led all Scarlet Knights in the Intermat, The Open Mat and WIN Magazine rankings, moving up one spot in each poll. He is ranked No. 5/5/6, respectively, entering RU's dual against Hofstra this Sunday.
The 2014 All-American began the season with an exclamation point, posting a pair of tech falls and a win by fall at the Rutgers Duals on Nov. 2.
Perrotti's classmate, Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.), was also ranked in the top 10, earning a No. 8/8/10 tab from the three polls. He is 3-0 to start the season.
Entering The Open Mat and the WIN Magazine rankings for the first time in his career was redshirt freshman 141-pounder Anthony Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.). The rookie is No. 16/19/20 nationally, moving up three spots in the Intermat rankings following RU's idle weekend. He began his career in dominant fashion on Nov. 2 at the Rutgers Duals, posting two wins by fall and a tech fall amid a 3-0 start.
Junior Ken Theobold (Toms River, N.J.) earned the first national ranking of his career by Intermat and W.I.N. Magazine this week following his 2-0 start to the year at the Rutgers Duals. The 2014 NCAA qualifier is No. 19/NR/20 in the three polls.
In the Associated Wrestling Press rankings, a number of Scarlet Knights were recognized. Fresh off a Clarion Open Championship on Nov. 2, 133-pounder Scott DelVecchio (South Plainfield, N.J.) was ranked No. 18 in the country. Other grapplers recognized were Ashnault (No. 14), Theobold (No. 19), Perrotti (No. 6), 174-pound sophomore Phil Bakuckas (Hammonton, N.J.) (No. 25) and Smith (No. 7).
The Scarlet Knights welcome regional rival Hofstra to the College Ave. Gym this Sunday for their first single dual match of the season. Wrestling will begin at 6 p.m.
