TROY, N.Y. - The Rutgers wrestling team stayed perfect Saturday at the Journeymen/Asics Northeast Duals, opening the day with a 20-18 win over No. 19 Oklahoma. RU went on to defeat West Virginia (19-16) and Buffalo (27-9) to finish 3-0 overall.
The win over Oklahoma was the first ranked victory for the Scarlet Knights since 2013, and gave RU its first win over the Sooners in program history.
The Scarlet Knights (7-0, 0-0 Big Ten) sealed the win over Oklahoma with a fall at 184 pounds, as junior Hayden Hrymack (Point Pleasnt, N.J.) made it a 20-9 match.
Hrymack's pin at the 5:30 mark gave RU a 20-9 advantage, while redshirt sophomore Anthony Pafumi (Westfield, N.J.) dropped a close 3-2 decision at 197. Despite the loss, Pafumi ended the possibility for an OU comeback, giving the Scarlet Knights their first win over a ranked opponent since an 18-16 win over No. 14 Bloomsburg on Feb. 8, 2013.
Against West Virginia, RU again built a big lead early. A 19-3 edge through seven bouts spelt the end for a possible Mountaineers' comeback, ending with a 15-6 major decision by redshirt sophomore 174-pounder Phil Bakuckas (Hammonton, N.J.).
WVU would have needed three consecutive falls to come back for the win, but instead earned a pin, major and decision at 184, 197 and 285, respectively. Those results lead to a 19-16 Rutgers win.
Five-straight decisions from 133-165 pounds proved to be the difference, as all four of RU's ranked grapplers put their opponents away.
The Scarlet Knights won seven of 10 bouts against Buffalo to close the day with a 27-9 win. 141-pounder Anthony Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.), 149-pounder Ken Theobold (Toms River, N.J.) and Bakuckas all capped their day with wins to go 3-0 on the afternoon.
No. NR/20/NR Scott DelVecchio (South Plainfield, N.J.) scored a fall (5:57) against Buffalo's Sean Peacock to close 2-1, only losing to No. 3/2/3 Cody Brewer (Oklahoma) by an 11-5 decision.
No. 5/4/5 Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) also ended with a 2-1 mark. Following a tight, 6-3, decision against No. 13/11/12 Justin DeAngelis (Oklahoma), Perrotti captured two consecutive decisions.
Hrymack also went 2-1 with a pin, while redshirt sophomore 125-pounder Sean McCabe (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) posted a 1-1 mark.
Freshman 285-pounder Wesley Bernard (Indianapolis, Ind.) picked up the first dual win of his career, 2-1, against Buffalo's Ian James.
RU completed its fifth-straight trip to the Northeast Duals, sweeping for the first time since 2012. The Scarlet Knights are now 12-2 at the event since 2010.
Rutgers picks back up from Dec. 5-6 in Las Vegas, Nev., at the Cliff Keen Invitational. The squad makes the trip out west for the second consecutive year.
