PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Junior back Brianne Reed (Tinton Falls, N.J.) was named to the 2014 National Soccer Coaches Association of America/ Continental Tire All-America Third Team, it was announced Friday.
Reed, who was also named First Team All-Big Ten, earns the first All-America recognition of her career and becomes the first RU back to receive the accolade since Jennifer Anzivino (Second Team) in 2009.
"To be named a Third Team All-American and the first All-American defender since 2009 is so exciting for Bri, her teammates, the coaching staff and the University," said head coach Mike O'Neill. "This honor is so well deserved and we are all so proud of her."
The defender started all 20 matches at center back alongside classmate Erica Skroski (Galloway, N.J.) and logged the second-most minutes on the team among field players (1,775).
She played the full time in 16 of 20 matches on a defense that allowed just 13 goals to finish the year with a 0.64 GAA. At the season's midway point, RU boasted the second-best GAA in the country.
The Scarlet Knights (13-6-1, 8-4-1 Big Ten) finished the season with 11 shutouts for the second consecutive year.
Her only goal of the season came at Nebraska on Sept. 25, as Reed put RU ahead 1-0 in the first half. That goal would eventually secure the draw, which earned a crucial point for the Scarlet Knights.
Reed added two assists on the season to finish with four points - at Princeton (Sept. 5) and against Stony Brook (Aug. 22).
Reed joins elite company in RU history with the honor. Just eight other Scarlet Knights all-time have been named to an NSCAA first, second or third All-America team. Those eight combined for 10 All-America spots, with the most recent honoree being Jonelle Filigno in 2012.
RU advanced to its third consecutive NCAA Tournament in 2014 and finished fourth in its first year in the Big Ten. The team achieved its third consecutive 13-win season before being edged in the second round of the NCAA Tournament against No. 4/4 Virginia.
