Rowing Trumps Villanova in Saturday Scrimmage
Mar 25 | Women's Rowing
VILLANOVA, Pa. (March 25, 2014) - The Rutgers rowing team closed its spring break on Saturday, March 22 with a scrimmage at Villanova, winning all four, four-minute pieces on the Upper Schuylkill River in the team's final preparations before its season-opener.
The Scarlet Knights' first and second varsity eight teams dominated their pieces, as the first team took all four pieces and the last by open water while the second team won handily against the Wildcats. The first novice eight won by open water on all four pieces, while the second novice eight was quite competitive against the first novice crew from Villanova, having overlap on each piece.
"We were able to get some good carry over from what we worked on over spring break and apply it to our racing" said head coach Max Borghard. "We felt really good about the fourth piece - not that we weren't happy with the first three - but we felt as if the rowers really put it together in the fourth. The novice crew did a great job racing and it's exciting to see them develop. [Associate head coach] Heather Putnam and [assistant coach] Jess Wojslaw are doing a great job developing these athletes."
RU opens its season on Friday, March 28 against Michigan State and Boston University on the Raritan River. The race marks the first of three this spring to be held in New Brunswick, N.J.
