PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Sept. 11, 2014) - Former Rutgers gymnastics competitor Alyssa Straub was named an assistant coach for the Alaska Anchorage gymnastics program, the school officially announced. Straub will work for head coach Paul Stoklos on the Seawolves' staff.
"We are extremely excited to add Alyssa to our coaching staff," Stoklos told GoSeawolves.com. "She is a truly dynamic individual who will add energy and excitement to our training and competitions. Coach (Tami) Monette and I are thrilled to welcome her to the Seawolf gymnastics family."
"Alyssa brought great energy day-in and day-out and has a true passion for gymnastics," Rutgers head coach Louis Levine said. "We wish her the best as she moves on to coaching."
A four-year letterwinner for the Scarlet Knights, Straub competed in 42 collegiate meets. This past season as a senior she helped RU earned a berth to the NCAA Regionals, the program's first appearance since 2007, and earned lineup spots on balance beam and vault at the NCAA meet. Straub held career-best event scores of 9.875 (vault), 9.700 (uneven bars), 9.875 (balance beam) and 9.800 (floor exercise).
As a sophomore, Straub earned All-EAGL Second Team All-Around recognition in addition to EAGL Second Team All-Tournament status. She picked up multiple academic awards during her career and served as a captain in 2013.
Prior to Rutgers, the Nazareth, Pa., native was a five-time Junior Olympic national qualifier, winning a national vault title in 2009. During the 2010 season, she was a state and regional champion in the all-around.
