VESTAL, N.Y. - Rutgers wrestling had 15 Scarlet Knights compete in the 2015 Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open Sunday, with junior Scott DelVecchio (South Plainfield, N.J.) posting the best outing with a runner-up finish at 133 pounds.
DelVecchio went 5-1 on the afternoon, winning his first two matches by tech fall and major decision. From there, DelVecchio notched three consecutive decisions to secure his spot in the title match against three-time NCAA All-American Nashon Garrett (Cornell).
Garrett, ranked No. 4 last week by Intermat, went on to win the title with a 6-1 decision against DelVecchio in their first-ever meeting.
Senior 149-pounder Ken Theobold (Toms River, N.J.) was the only other Scarlet Knight to place, finishing sixth after a medical forfeit against Chris Perez (Princeton) ended his day. Theobold rolled prior to that match, securing a fall and a pair of major decisions to advance to the championship semifinals. There he met two-time NCAA qualifier C.J. Cobb of Penn, who handed him a narrow 3-2 defeat.
Theobold, also a two-time NCAA qualifier, went 4-1 overall in the tournament.
Josh Patrick (Rector, Pa.) made a run to the quarterfinals at 125 pounds with a first round bye and a pair of victories. In Patrick's first match he pinned Army Prep's Brandon Roseborough in 2:20, following that performance with a 9-2 decision.
Sacred Heart's Gerald Daly handed Patrick his first loss of the day, 7-5, in the quarters, but Patrick bounced back with a 17-3 major against Drexel's Tanner Shoap.
Rookie Peter Lipari (Byram, N.J.) had a strong tournament in his first collegiate action. The freshman went 5-1 at 133 pounds, responding with five consecutive victories in wrestle-backs after a 6-2 loss to Jeff Ott of Harvard in his first match.
Also making their college debuts were 141-pounder William Povalac (Edison, N.J.), 157-pounder Willie Scott (Brick, N.J.), and 197-pounder Kyle Kremiller (Perry, Ohio), all of whom picked up wins.
Returning Scarlet Knights to compete included redshirt freshman Nicholas Ottaviano (Marlboro, N.J.) at 133 pounds, redshirt junior Jalen Ramos (Bayville, N.J.) at 141 pounds, redshirt freshman John Van Brill (Mullica Hill, N.J.) at 157 pounds, redshirt sophomore Dylan Painton (South Plainfield, N.J.) at 157 pounds, redshirt junior Mikey Simmons (Middletown, Pa.) at 165 pounds, redshirt sophomore Anthony Messner (Somerset, N.J.) at 184 pounds and sophomore Ralph Normandia (Somerset, N.J.) at heavyweight.
