Rowing Competes At Murphy Cup

CHERRY HILL, N.J. -- The Rutgers rowing team opened the 2015 season on Saturday, March 28 at the 33rd Annual Murphy Cup. The Scarlet Knights' First and Second Varsity 8, Novice 8 and First and Second Varsity 4 boats competed in the event, held throughout the day on the Cooper River.

"The team had a good week of practice and we took a good positive step," said head coach Max Borghard. "The Varsity 4 had a good race in the morning along with the Second Varsity 8, which won its heat. The Varsity 8 had a better second race in the afternoon, showing improvement from the morning heats."
The Second Varsity 8 began the day strong with a top finish, clocking in at 7:23.69 to best Drexel, Connecticut, Lehigh, Mercyhurst and Pittsburgh. The result put the 2V8 in the Women's Collegiate JV 8+ Final, where RU finished sixth in 7:39.84.
The First Varsity 4 raced to a third-place finish in its opening heat, missing out on a final appearance by one place. The boat finished in 8:34.46, ahead of Buffalo, Hamilton and Lehigh.
RU's First Varsity 8 finished fourth with a time on 7:08.50 in its first heat to earn a spot in the Petite Final. In the final, the Scarlet Knights also finished fourth in 7:02.21, less than seconds behind third-place Bates College (6:59.95).
The Novice 8 crew recorded a time of 8:28.27 in its heat, good for fifth place.
Rutgers is back in action for its second race of the year on Saturday, April 11 against Minnesota and Wisconsin in Columbus, Ohio.
"I know the team will work very hard over the next two weeks to get ready for the Big Ten double dual that will be held at Ohio State," Borghard said.
