Softball Edged on Senior Day

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (May 2, 2015) -- The Rutgers softball fell in the middle game of its series against Wisconsin by a slim margin of 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at the RU Softball Complex.
Prior to contest, Rutgers honored its three seniors -- Jackie Bates (Lincroft, N.J.), Chandler Howard (North Wilmington, Del.) and Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) -- for their four years "On the Banks."
In honor of Friends of Jaclyn Day, the Scarlet Knights' team sister, JaDa, threw out the first pitch. RU also honored Rutgers softball alumni during the contest, which included current assistant coach Lindsey Curran and former head coach Pat Willis.
Wisconsin started the game with a two-run home run from Kelsey Jenkins in the opening frame. Despite junior Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) retiring the next eight Badgers at the plate, UW's Jenkins registered her second homer of the day to break the streak and extend the Badger's lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth.
The Rutgers offense got its momentum rolling in the top bottom of the fourth. Following a walk from junior Melanie Slowisnki (Severn, Md.) and a single from freshman Sierra Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.), sophomore Carly Todd (Deptford, N.J.) loaded the bases with a walk of her own. Slowinski would then cross the plate on a wild pitch, cutting into the deficit, 3-1.
UW responded with another home run from Kelsey Jenkins to move in front, 4-1, in the first half of the sixth. Dresden Maddox then shut down the Badgers, retiring four straight batters to send the Scarlet Knight offense out for one more chance in the bottom of the seventh.
Following a walk from Bates, junior Jordan Whitley (Clayton, Del.) singled to put two runners on. Next, a wild pitch would move the two into scoring position. However, the momentum was not enough to surpass the Badgers.
Rutgers and Wisconsin wrap up the series on Sunday at noon.
