PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers football (1-1) delivered Chris Ash his first victory as head coach Saturday at High Point Solutions Stadium, as Janarion Grant combined for 248 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns in a 52-14 win against Howard (0-2).
Following a tie score through 30 minutes of action, the Scarlet Knights found the endzone five times in the second half while blanking the Bison and limiting HU to five yards of total offense.
Grant got Rutgers on the board with a kickoff return for a touchdown early in the first quarter, the fifth of his career. Taking the short kick near the RU sideline, Grant shot up the middle at the pursuing Bison, spinning out of a tackle, juking twice, and sprinting up the right sideline to complete an 84-yard run. The touchdown made it 14-7 Howard with 9:12 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Trilby, Florida, native gave the Scarlet Knights the lead for good on his second score, a 58-yard rush from scrimmage on a direct snap to begin the second half. Grant netted another touchdown for good measure before the end of the third quarter, putting him over 100 yard rushing for the first time in his career.
Junior quarterback Chris Laviano was 11-for-22 passing with 137 yards and three touchdowns. Laviano connected with seven different RU receivers, highlighted by touchdown grabs from Andre Patton, Carlton Agudosi and Jawuan Harris. Patton's 22-yard haul in the second quarter knotted the game at 14-14.
Rolling left, Laviano spotted Agudosi in the back of the endzone for a 7-yard strike at the 9:47-mark, the second touchdown of Agudosi's career. Laviano's final touchdown, a 29-yard throw and catch, went to Harris down the Howard sideline. It was the first touchdown of Harris' career and made it a 42-14 contest with 14:53 remaining.
Backup quarterbacks Giovanni Rescigno and Tylin Oden both saw action in the fourth quarter, though neither attempted a pass. On his first-career rush from scrimmage, Rescigno darted through the left side for a 42-yard touchdown on the Scarlet Knights' final touchdown of the game. Oden rushed for 58 yards on 10 carries.
Junior David Bonagura added a 28-yard field goal with 44 seconds left on the clock, bringing the final score to 52-14.
Rutgers returns to High Point Solutions Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 17 to face New Mexico at noon. The game will air live nationally on ESPNews.
