MANHATTAN, KS – After tying the school record with a 287 on Monday, Rutgers women's golf posted a 308 in challenging conditions during Tuesday's final round to place fourth with a 904 (309-287-308) total at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational, played at the Colbert Hills Golf Course. On the heels of a program-record 66 on day two, redshirt junior Ashleigh Greenham registered a team-best 75 on Tuesday to finish fourth in the 51-player field with a 219 (78-66-75).
"Today's conditions were definitely tougher and it showed in the scores," said head coach Kari Williams. "It was fun to be in contention and in a fight up at the top of the leaderboard; unfortunately, this wasn't the result we were hoping for. Our rounds of 75 and 76 were pretty good in these strong winds, but we will head home and get ourselves prepared for a competitive weekend at Penn State."
Playing in first position, Greenham was an event best, five-under on par five holes to compile a tournament-best 13 birdies. The co-captain was even on par threes and had an eagle on a 290-yard, par four hole during the final round.
Seniors Emily Mills and Tatum Jackson maintained their consistent play en route to top 20 finishes. Mills had nine birdies to place 15th with a 226 (76-74-76), while Jackson registered 10 birdies to finish tied for 20th with a 229 (77-71-81).
Freshman Harriet Allsebrook and sophomore Carrie-Ann Lee completed the team scorecard. Allsebrook tied for 30th with a 157 (79-78-76), while Lee tied for 37th with a 236 (78-76-82).
Collectively the Scarlet Knights counted 40 birdies on the par 72, 6,235-yard course.
Host Kansas State captured the team title by 17 strokes, compiling an 881 (287-296-298) on its home course. Kansas placed second, while Tulsa finished third. The Wildcats boasted three finishers in the top five, including Connie Jaffrey, who won the Invitational with a six-under 210 (66-72-72).
Rutgers placed ahead of North Texas, Arkansas State, Little Rock, Central Arkansas and Georgia Southern in the nine team event.
The Scarlet Knights return to the links this weekend (Sept. 23-24) at the Nittany Lion Invitational at the Penn State Golf Course in University Park, Pa. Greenham carded a 217 (73-72-72) to place second, one stroke off the pace, in the 61-player tournament last year, as the Scarlet Knights tied for third.
