LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 29, 2019) - Women's golf carded a program-record 281 on Sunday to jump four positions and place second with an 874 (295-298-281) total at the 13-team Bettie Lou Evans Invitational on the University Club of Kentucky Big Blue Course. The Scarlet Knights topped their previous best round by three strokes, as senior Carrie-Ann Lee finished as runner-up in the 75-player field with a three-under 213 (71-75-67).
Three Scarlet Knights shot well-under par on the final 18 holes, with sophomore Harriet Allsebrook carding a 68 and junior Eun Won Park a 69 on the par-72, 6,114-yard course. RU's Sunday effort was the lowest round of the tournament and bested RU's previous program-mark of 284, set last season at the Juli Inkster Meadow Club Collegiate.
"I'm proud of the way the team competed today from start to finish," said head coach Kari Williams. "Our goal this morning was to make a move up the leaderboard and the team did exactly that, playing hard through their closing holes. Eun Won did a great job of bouncing back for us today, Harriet was striking the ball nicely, and Carrie-Ann posted a career-low to lead the team."
Rutgers' 874 signaled the second-best 54-hole total in program history, behind the 868 carded at the Juli Inkster.
"This took a total team effort—we used scores from all five players and had five rounds under par this weekend," added Williams. "This will be a great event for us to build on as we head into the last few weeks of the season."
Lee registered a tournament-best 13 birdies and was minus-two on both par four and five holes for the event.
"My shots off the tee put me in better positions to attack a few pins today," said Lee. "I rolled in a few nice putts and was able to take advantage of those birdie opportunities. I've felt like my game has been in a good place and it was exciting to have it come together today when my teammates were also playing really well."
After missing the initial two tournaments of the fall season due to an elbow injury, Allsebrook returned in definitive fashion, tying for eighth with a one-under 215 (72-75-68). She was minus-one on par fives and threes and counted 10 birdies.
"I had some solid shots and created some good birdie opportunities," said Allsebrook. "A few long putts rolled in for me and I really enjoyed the round. It was fun to have great closing rounds and to have our team scores resemble what we know we are capable of."
Sophomore Maeve Rossi joined Lee and Rossi in the top 25, tying for 22nd with a 224 (76-71-77). She produced 37 pars against a challenging field that included programs from the SEC, Big Ten, The American and Conference USA.
Park and freshman Anna-Maria Diederichs completed the RU scorecard. Park tied for 44th with a 228 (77-82-69) and Diederichs placed 66th with a 234 (76-77-81). Park was minus-two on par five holes and counted 10 birdies, including five on Sunday.
"It felt good to go low in the final round," said Park. "My short game and putting came together. I was able to manage myself around the course much better today."
Rutgers downed Big Ten Rival Penn State by one stroke, also placing ahead of Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee, Tulane, Eastern Kentucky, Memphis, Indianapolis, Akron, Murray State, Marshall and Cincinnati.
The host Wildcats won the Invitational with a five-under 859 (285-287-287). Indianapolis' Pilar Echeverria earned individual medalist honors with a five-under 211 (70-71-70).
The Scarlet Knights return to the links at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, October 8-9 in Sahalee, Wash.
