Women’s Golf Has Strong Finish in California
Mar 10 | Women's Golf
FAIRFAX, Calif. – Women's golf carded an 893 (299-303-291) to tie for seventh at the 13-team Juli Inkster at Meadow Club Invitational, played Monday and Tuesday. The Scarlet Knights carded Tuesday's second-lowest round to improve four positions in the competitive field that featured eight programs with Golfstat rankings in the top 80.
"We posted a good round today on a very difficult golf course," said Williams. "I'm proud of the way the team played and carded some of their strongest rounds this season. We put in a lot of work on the putting green this weekend and the team handled these challenging and quick greens well."
Senior Ana Cortes carded a career-best tying 70 over the final 18 holes to help spark the team's rise, which was further supplemented by a 73 from freshman Anna-Maria Diederichs.
"Today's round was a lot of fun," said Cortes. "I got started with a few good putts and felt really confident with my putter after struggling yesterday. I was able to rely on my longer clubs throughout all three rounds and today was happy that my game came together."
"It was great to see Ana bounce back today," added Williams. "She rolled in a lot of difficult putts and competed hard for us. Her low round for us and Anna-Maria's 73 helped us climb the leaderboard and finish strong at the event."
Diederichs tied for 23rd with a 224 (73-78-73) to lead four Scarlet Knights among the top 30 in the 72-player tournament. She was an event-best minus three on par three holes with a team-best 10 birdies on the par 72, 6,157-yard course.
Sophomore Maeve Rossi (72-75-78), senior Carrie-Ann Lee (75-76-74) and Cortes (81-74-70) all tied for 29th with 225 totals. Rossi registered 38 pars and was minus one on par five holes along with Lee and Cortes.
Junior Eun Won Park tied for 46th with a 231 (79-78-74) to complete the team scorecard. She was even on par threes, as RU was a tournament-best plus-three on the shorter yardage holes.
Oregon State won the Invitational with an 871 (291-296-284), besting fellow Pac 12 Conference member Washington State by six strokes. The Cougars had two competitors tie for first individually with two-under 214 efforts.
The Scarlet Knights tied with San Francisco and finished one stroke behind sixth place Pepperdine and two strokes behind fifth place San Jose State. RU placed ahead of Kansas State, Minnesota, Northern Arizona, Colorado State and Gonzaga.
Rutgers returns to the links at the Lady Buckeye Invitational in Columbus, Ohio, April 18-19.
