NEW ORLEANS – Rutgers women's golf closed out play at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate, hosted by Tulane, on Tuesday at the English Turn Golf Club in New Orleans. The Scarlet Knights finished fifth in the 13-team field with a 914 (301-310-303), as junior Maeve Rossi carded her second consecutive top-10 finish to lead RU in the highly-competitive field.
Nebraska won the team title with its 20-over-par 884 (294-302-288), followed by Texas State (891: 296-298-297) and host Tulane (900: 308-307-285). Nebraska's Kate Smith earned individual honors with her one-under-par 215 (71-74-70).
"We struggled to score and make birdies today but finished the round stronger than we have been able to in previous events," said head coach Kari Williams. "The opening stretch of the round was solid, we made a few mistakes in the middle, and closed with a couple of birdies to hold onto our spot on the leaderboard and earn our first Big Ten win of the season."
As high as first on the leaderboard during the three-day tournament, Rossi tied for 10th with her 10-over-par 226 (73-74-79). Rossi, who also tied for sixth in RU's previous appearance at the River Landing Classic last week, finished play seven birdies across her three rounds.
Sophomore Leigha Devine produced the lowest third round for Rutgers with her one-over-par 73 to finish tied for 23rd (229: 76-80-73), while classmate Anna-Maria Diederichs also tied for 23rd (229: 74-78-77) in the 81-player-field. Graduate student Manon Tounalom moved up five spots from Monday to tie for 32nd (231: 78-78-75), and rookie Rikke Nordvik rounded the team scorecard tied for 71st (246: 82-86-78). Competing as an individual, Sun Hwang finished 69th with a three-round 244 (81-82-81).
Rutgers returns to the links March 23-24 at the Pinetree Invitational in Kennesaw, Georgia. Several Scarlet Knights will also compete at the Fairleigh Dickinson Shootout on March 21 in Watchung, New Jersey.
