Toure Named to Comeback Player of the Year Watch List

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers football LB Mohamed Toure earned a spot on the 2023 Comeback Player of the Year watch list released today, College Sports Communicators announced in association with The Associated Press and the Fiesta Bowl Organization.

After suffering a season-ending injury during spring practice in 2022, Toure has reemerged as a contributor for a Scarlet Knight defense that ranks 10th nationally in passing defense (165.2), 13th in scoring defense (14.7), 14th in total defense (282.7) and 40th in rushing defense (117.5). That includes three games allowing seven or fewer points.

Toure has recorded at least five tackles in all six games, totaling 37 overall with three for a loss. The linebacker is coming off a career-high eight stops at Wisconsin, adding a forced fumble in the game. Previously, he led the team in sacks in 2020 and 2021.

The Pleasantville, New Jersey, native was voted a captain prior to the season.

Since 2018, the award has recognized college football student-athletes from all divisions of college football for overcoming injury, illness or other circumstances. At the conclusion of each season, in a vote by a select panel, three college football student-athletes are honored as Comeback Player of the Year Award winners at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl.

The Scarlet Knights are back at SHI Stadium Saturday to host Michigan State for Homecoming & Family Weekend. Kickoff is set for noon and is presented by RWJBarnabas Health.
