PISCATAWAY, N.J. – For the second consecutive year, defensive coordinator Joe Harasymiak represents Rutgers football as a nominee for the Broyles Award, the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation announced Tuesday. The award honors college football's top assistant coaches.
After the Scarlet Knights posted their best mark in total defense (349.8) in 10 years last season, the unit has continued to improve to rank ninth nationally in passing defense (166.2), 13th in total defense (294.4), 19th in scoring defense (18.3) and 38th in rushing defense (128.2). That includes five opponents held under 300 total yards and four under 150 passing yards. Rutgers has allowed 16 or fewer points in five games and in single digits three times, posting four scoreless halves.
RU also ranks seventh in the country in red zone defense (0.719) with nine stops.
The defense has seen numerous contributions, as 12 different players have been in on a sack and six recorded an interception so far. Seven of the eight fumbles forced have been recovered.
A native of Waldwick, New Jersey, Harasymiak is in his second season as the Scarlet Knights' defensive coordinator. He is among the 57 nominees from across the country out of approximately 1,500 assistant coaches at the FBS level. The Broyles Award has been bestowed since 1996.
The Scarlet Knights are bowl eligible and are poised to earn the 12th bowl invitation in program history. For fans interested in receiving bowl ticket information, please submit the 2023 Rutgers Bowl Interest Form. Details will be sent out as they become available in the coming weeks.
