YANKEE STADIUM • BRONX, N.Y.
DECEMBER 28, 2023 • ATTENDANCE: 35,314

BRONX, N.Y. – Rutgers football (7-6) defeated Miami (7-6), 31-24, on Thursday at the 2023 Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl. It marked the program's seventh bowl championship, sixth under head coach Greg Schiano and second victory in the Pinstripe Bowl, as the Scarlet Knights secured their first winning season since 2014.

Down 17-14 with just over 10 minutes left in the third quarter, RU scored 17 unanswered points to collect the win over the Hurricanes. DB Trevor Yeboah-Kodie blocked a punt at Miami's one-yard line, which was recovered by DB Timmy Ward in the end zone for a touchdown, while QB Gavin Wimsatt's second rushing score of the day and a 35-yard field goal from PK Jai Patel helped Rutgers to the come-from-behind victory.

RB Kyle Monangai earned the game's MVP trophy after he finished with 25 carries for 163 yards and a touchdown. It was the seventh 100-yard rushing game for Monangai, who finished the season with 1,262 yards on the ground.

LB Deion Jennings led the defense with nine tackles and one for loss, LB Mohamed Toure added eight tackles, two tackles-for-loss and a sack, while freshman LB Abram Wright recorded his first career interception.

FIRST QUARTER

Rutgers received the opening kickoff and tallied a 13-play, 75-yard scoring drive. Wimsatt capped the Scarlet Knights' first possession with a one-yard touchdown run, as his 10th rushing score of the season put RU up 7-0 at the 6:54 mark in the first quarter. Monangai carried the ball six times for 48 yards on the opening drive, which included a 22-yard run on the first offensive play of the game.

The defense forced Miami to punt on the ensuing possession thanks to Toure, who sacked QB Jacurri Brown for an eight-yard loss on third down in Hurricanes' territory. The score remained 7-0 through the first break.

SECOND QUARTER

After a Rutgers' missed field goal on its next possession, the Scarlet Knights responded with their first takeaway of the afternoon. Wright picked off Brown at Miami's 45-yard line, returning the interception three yards to set up RU in enemy territory.

Monangai took it the rest of the way off the turnover, scoring on a seven-yard run to make it 14-0 Rutgers midway through the second quarter. Wimsatt completed two crucial passes during the drive, which included an 11-yard pass to WR Famah Toure and a 23-yard completion to WR Christian Dremel.

The Hurricanes would add a touchdown and field goal late in the second quarter to make it a 14-10 game at halftime. Rutgers outgained Miami, 170-109, in the first half, churning out 19:52 of possession while holding UM to just 41 rushing yards before the locker room.

THIRD QUARTER
Miami was the first to score out of halftime after Brown found WR Xavier Restrepo for a 30-yard touchdown pass. The scoring play gave the Hurricanes their first lead of the day at 17-14 with 10:33 left in the third quarter.

Special teams came into play to help the Scarlet Knights regain their lead. Yeboah-Kodie recorded RU's third blocked punt of the season at the Miami one-yard line, which was recovered by Ward in the end zone for the touchdown. Ward's second career recovered blocked punt for a score put RU up 21-17 at the 5:06 mark.
FOURTH QUARTER
Rutgers forced another punt to open the fourth quarter and capitalized with a six-play, 65-yard scoring drive. Monangai ripped off a game-high 40-yard rush to set up Wimsatt for a one-yard touchdown run, putting the Scarlet Knights up 28-17 with 11:51 left on the clock.

RU's defense then recorded a huge drive stop in Maimi territory. The Hurricanes went for it on fourth-and-two from their own 45-yard line and were stuffed by LB Deion Jennings for a loss. Rutgers took off seven minutes of game clock with its final drive of the game, ended with a 35-yard field goal from Patel.

While Miami added a late touchdown to draw within a score, it was not enough, as Rutgers held on to secure the victory.
