Max Melton is set to represent Rutgers football at the Reese's Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. The game is set for Feb. 3, 2024 at Hancock Whitney Stadium and will be televised by NFL Network.
The Reese's Senior Bowl is widely regarded as the preeminent college football all-star game and the first stage in the NFL Draft process. More than 900 NFL personnel, including key decision-makers from all 32 teams and over 1,100 media members from around the country were credentialed last year. Sixteen Scarlet Knights have been selected in the past, including
Adam Korsak (2023), Bo Melton (2022), Kemoko Turay (2018), Leonte Carroo (2016), Khaseem Greene (2013), Steve Beauharnais (2013), Joe Lefeged (2011), Devin McCourty (2010), Clark Harris (2007), Brian Leonard (2007), L.J. Smith (2003), Mike McMahon (2001), Robert Barr (1996), Bruce Presley (1996), Steve Simms (1962) and Alex Kroll (1962).
An honorable mention All-Big Ten selection each of the last two years, Melton has started the last 31 games for the Scarlet Knights in playing 43 overall. The defensive back owns 22 career pass breakups, eight interceptions, 114 tackles, four fumble recoveries and four blocked kicks.
Melton brought in two takeaways in the red zone this past season, forcing and recovering a fumble at Wisconsin and hauling in a pick at Iowa. He also recorded interceptions versus Northwestern and Maryland, adding six pass breakups.
In 2022, Melton led the nation with three blocked kicks, including one returned for a touchdown versus Michigan. The Mays Landing, New Jersey, native tied for seventh in the Big Ten in passes defended per game (1.0).
Rutgers ranks 11th nationally in passing defense (175.9) with eight opponents held under 200 yards and five under 150 yards this year. The unit is also 19th in total defense (313.7), 27th in scoring defense (21.0) and ninth in red zone defense (.738, 11 stops). In Big Ten play, the Scarlet Knights limited opponents to 25.1 points and 337.9 yards per game, the best marks for the team since joining the Big Ten.
