SHI STADIUM • PISCATAWAY, N.J.
SEPTEMBER 7, 2024 • ATTENDANCE: 41,021

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers football (2-0) defeated Akron (0-2), 49-17, on Saturday afternoon at SHI Stadium. RB Kyle Monangai rushed for a career-high 208 yards and three touchdowns to help the Scarlet Knights secure the non-conference victory.

QB Athan Kaliakmanis finished with 14 completions for 230 yards and three touchdowns, finding WR KJ Duff, TE Kenny Fletcher and WR Chris Long on scoring plays. Monangai averaged 7.7 yards per carry during his career outing, which included a career-long 62-yard rush in the first half. With his 208 yards on the ground, Monangai became the first player since 2014 to go over 200 yards for Rutgers in a single game.

Saturday marked the first time in program history Rutgers has scored 40 or more points in each of its first two games, as the Scarlet Knights produced touchdowns on six consecutive drives to pull away from the Zips.

RU's defense held the Zips to three points in the first half and registered a takeaway in its 10th consecutive game dating back to last season. DL Malcolm Ray and DB Eric Rogers both registered sacks, DB Shaquan Loyal registered his first interception of the season and DB Robert Longerbeam batted down two passes.

FIRST QUARTER
After Akron missed a field goal on its second possession, Rutgers muscled a six-play, 76-yard scoring drive, capped by a three-yard rushing touchdown from Monangai. He also tallied a 46-yard rush during the drive, which gave the Scarlet Knights a 7-0 advantage right before the first break.

SECOND QUARTER
RU closed the second quarter with back-to-back touchdowns in the final 1:54 of the opening half. Kaliakmanis found Duff, who took a deflected pass off an Akron defender and held on in the back of the end zone for the first touchdown reception of his career.

Rutgers then held the Zips to a three-and-out on their next possession, forcing Akron to punt with 1:19 on the clock. Kaliakmanis orchestrated a 10-play scoring drive, completing four passes for 61 yards to set up a Monangai one-yard touchdown run. The score with nine seconds on the clock gave the Scarlet Knights a 21-3 lead at the half.

THIRD QUARTER
Akron scored first to begin the second half, but RU responded with a 12-play, 75-yard scoring drive. Kaliakmanis found WR Dymere Miller for a 22-yard connection to cross midfield, while Monangai rushed six times inside the Zips' territory, including his third touchdown of the afternoon. Monangai's two-yard score made it 28-10 Rutgers with 4:56 left in the quarter.

Kaliakmanis electrified the crowd on the Scarlet Knights' following passion. With 46 seconds remaining before the final break, Kaliakmanis found Long for a 58-yard touchdown pass, putting RU up 35-10 heading into the fourth.
FOURTH QUARTER
Rutgers' offense continued to churn out points in the final 15 minutes of play, as Kaliakmanis tossed a nine-yard touchdown pass to Fletcher for his third touchdown throw of the afternoon.

On Akron's following possession, Loyal picked off Ben Finley to set up the Scarlet Knights in the red zone. The first takeaway of the day set up a one-yard touchdown run from RB Antwan Raymond, which gave Rutgers a 49-10 advantage.

While the Zips added a touchdown later in the quarter, RU would run out the majority of the clock and secure the 49-17 victory.
