Kyvelos Sets School Record in 3,000-Meter

BOSTON ā For the third time in as many weeks, Rutgers track and field closed out competition with a school record as Stephen Kyvelos set the top time in the 3,000-meter at the Scarlet and White Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 24. The Scarlet Knights turned in a total of eight performances on the school's top-10 all-time list at the Track & Tennis Center on the Boston University campus.

"Great to get out on the road for the first time and compete," said Bobby Farrell, director of track & field and cross country. "We had some very strong performances. The team has positive energy right now and they're taking advantage of the opportunities."

The oldest standing distance record on the men's side, Kyvelos broke the record previously set by Jim Casey (8:06.20; 1/25/1982) 44 years ago. Kyvelos ran a time of 8:04.09 to etch his name in the Rutgers record books. His time was good for fifth in the race, followed by Liam Tilton who placed sixth with the second-fastest Rutgers time in 8:05.40.

Rutgers posted three wins on the afternoon, including going 1-2-3 in the women's 400-meter. Charlee Crawford finished first in the event, running a time of 53.34, followed by Celine-Jada Brown in second in 53.40 and Success Duruzor in third with a time of 55.13.

Abby Love finished third in the 60-meter with a time of 7.50 (7.495), while Kelseigh O'Neil placed fourth in the 3,000 with a time of 9:32.55. Love also joined Sierra Latonnel, Cynthia Boakye and Naylah Jones in the 4x400-meter relay, as the group placed third in a time of 3:50.81. Latonnel also posted a mark on the top-10 all-time list in the triple jump as she finished second with a distance of 12.40m (40' 8.25").

On the men's side, Lathan Brown won the 400-meter in 47.68, while Joseph Oduro finished first in the triple jump with distance of 15.71m (51' 6.25"). Shamali Whittle finished second in the 60-meter, running a time of 6.78 and Gabriel Rodriguez placed fifth in the 800-meter in 1:51.02.

The Scarlet Knights will travel to Philadelphia and The Ott Center for the third time this season for the Penn Invitational on Friday, Jan. 30.
