PISCATAWAY, N.J. ā Rutgers sophomore swimmer Emilianna Gonzalez was named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Gonzalez had two first place finishes and one second place mark as the New York, N.Y. native excelled during RU's meet last weekend against Princeton. Gonzalez won the 50 Freestyle with a time of 22.37. That mark is tied for the second fastest time in school history and is a top-10 time in the Big Ten this year in the event.
Gonzalez also had two top performances in RU's relays. She helped the 200 Free Relay team finish in first place with the group's fastest split time (22.00) as RU finished in 1:31.07, 0.9 seconds ahead of second place. She also anchored the 200 Medley Relay to second place finish, again with the fastest split time (21.93).
Gonzalez won the 50 Free versus Princeton for second straight year. After doing so last year, she also was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week and then also earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors.
This is the second Big Ten weekly award for RU this season. Florence Robitaille previously won Big Ten Freshman of the Week on October 21.
Gonzalez is the first Scarlet Knight to win Big Ten Swimmer of the Week multiple times. She continues RU's streak of four consecutive seasons with a Big Ten Swimmer of the Week award and earns RU's eighth lifetime Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honors.
Rutgers is back in action on the road this weekend. The Scarlet Knights will be in Charlotte on Friday and Saturday, where they will face Queens and Vanderbilt.
