Feb 16 | Wrestling
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 14 Rutgers wrestling (13-5) defeated Princeton (4-10), 28-9, on Monday night in front of 3,820 fans at Jersey Mike's Arena. The win was the fifth consecutive over the Tigers in the in-state rivalry, as the Scarlet Knights have now won 29 of the last 30 matchups between the two schools dating back to 1993.
RU worked a 7-3 match split with Princeton, highlighted by a top-10 victory from No. 29 Andrew Clark (149) over No. 10 Eligh Rivera, and a ranked win from No. 19 Andrew Barbosa (165) over No. 17 Ty Whalen.
Along with the ranked decisions, Rutgers picked up bonus points from No. 6 Joseph Olivieri (141), No. 16 Remy Cotton (165), No. 19 Hunter Catka (HWT) and No. 20 Shane Cartagena-Walsh (184). No. 26 Anthony White (165) added a decision to help the Scarlet Knights retain the B1G-IVY Trophy.
"[Princeton] wrestled really hard, but our guys continue to find ways to win," said head coach Scott Goodale. "It's a different guy every night. It's really good to have Joey [Olivieri] back. He's the spark we've been missing, and we got him back at the right time."
Monday also served as Senior Night, as Catka, Clark, Olivieri, White, Patrick Adams, Brandan Chletsos, Eric Freeman, Sebastiano Nini, Lenny Pinto and Dylan Shawver were all recognized prior to the dual.
Princeton won the toss and elected to start at 174 pounds, as Pinto faced Holden Garcia. Pinto jumped out to an early lead with a takedown in the first period, but the back-and-forth match went to sudden victory. Garcia would then land a takedown for the 8-5 overtime win, putting Princeton up 3-0.
The Scarlet Knights responded with three consecutive bonus-point victories to widen the gap. After letting up a takedown, Cartagena-Walsh stormed back with a dominant 21-8 major decision. Cotton landed six takedowns in his 19-4 tech fall over Conor McCloskey, while Catka produced five takedowns in the first three minutes en route to a 21-5 tech fall over Sebastian Garibaldi. The bonus blitz gave RU a 14-3 advantage through four bouts.
A tough 5-1 loss from No. 24 Ayden Smith (125) to No. 12 Marc-Anthony McGowen made it 14-6 Rutgers at intermission.
Princeton would make it 14-9 after a loss from Shawver against Ethan Rivera, but the Scarlet Knights found wins in their final four bouts to secure the dual. The charge was started by Olivieri, who collected back points in the opening period against Matthew Martino before closing out his tech fall with another four-point tilt late in the second.
Clark followed against Eligh Rivera, who entered Monday ranked No. 10 in the country by Intermat. Clark worked an escape in the second period, then muscled a two-minute rideout in the third for the 2-1 final – the highest-ranked win for Clark this season.
White was in full control of his match against Rocco Camillaci, collecting two takedowns for the 7-0 decision which put the dual out of reach. Barbosa closed out the dual with No. 17 Whalen, using a first-period takedown for a 4-3 final, as Rutgers left Jersey Mike's Arena with a 28-9 win.
