Mar 08 | Wrestling
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – No. 11 Rutgers wrestling finished action at the 2026 Big Ten Wrestling Championships on Sunday at the Bryce Jordan Center. Seven Scarlet Knights placed at the conference tournament, while eight earned automatic bids to the 2026 NCAA Wrestling Championships later this month in Cleveland.
After securing seven national qualifiers the night prior, RU picked up its eighth thanks to Hunter Catka (HWT), who earned back-to-back wins Sunday afternoon and pinned Josh Terrill (Michigan State) in his ninth-place bout to secure his fourth career trip to NCAAs.
2026 Big Ten Championships Placewinners (7)
5th: Joseph Olivieri (141)
5th: Shane Cartagena-Walsh (184)
6th: Andrew Barbosa (165)
6th: Lenny Pinto (174)
6th: Remy Cotton (197)
7th: Andrew Clark (149)
8th: Ayden Smith (125)
The Scarlet Knights' eight bids to nationals are the most since they brought eight to Kansas City in 2024. It marks just the fourth time in program history RU has qualified eight or more for NCAAs, joining the cohorts from 2024 (8), 2016 (10) and 2011 (8). The eight automatic qualifiers are the most for Rutgers out of the Big Ten Championships since it punched nine through at the 2016 conference tournament in Iowa City.
Dylan Shawver (133) also wrestled to ninth place to finish one spot outside of an automatic bid. With top 33 coaches' rankings and RPIs, Shawver and Anthony White (157) will wait to see if they earn at-large selections to the NCAA Championships when they are announced Tuesday. If both are selected, Rutgers will bring its full lineup to the national tournament for just the second time in school history.
The Scarlet Knights worked seven podium finishes to close out the Big Ten Championships on Sunday. Joseph Olivieri (141) and Shane Cartagena-Walsh (184) placed fifth, while Andrew Barbosa (165), Lenny Pinto (174) and Remy Cotton (197) all placed sixth. Andrew Clark (149) finished seventh and Ayden Smith (125) wrapped up his first championships eighth.
With 63.5 points, Rutgers finished eighth in the team standings. The Scarlet Knights combined for 27 wins over the weekend, which included 18 over ranked Intermat foes, five wins over top 15 opponents and a marquee victory from Barbosa of 2025 NCAA runner-up and No. 2 Joey Blaze (Purdue) during the quarterfinals.
"I'm happy we were able to get eight through to the national tournament," said head coach Scott Goodale. "I didn't like the way we finished on Sunday, and there are things we need to work on to get prepared for Cleveland. We had some big wins this weekend, and I'm hoping we get a few more at-larges when its all said and done."
The seven placewinners mark just the third time Rutgers has produced seven or more top eight finishes at Big Tens in program history. Caratagena-Walsh, Clark and Olivieri all placed at the conference tournament for the second consecutive year, becoming the 15th, 16th and 17th multi-placewinners for the program since Rutgers began competing in the Big Ten in 2014-15. Pinto returned to the podium for the fourth time in his career after doing so three times at Nebraska.
Olivieri delivered a win in his final bout of the championships, earning a 5-2 decision over No. 11 Dario Lemus (Maryland) in his fifth-place match. Cartagena-Walsh earned a medical forfeit over No. 3 seed Silas Allred (Nebraska) to also finish fifth, while Barbosa, Cotton and Pinto all lost their respective fifth-place bouts to ranked foes.
Rutgers saw its most success in the ninth-place action, with Catak and Shawver both earning multiple wins in their respective brackets. In his ninth-place final, Shawver squared off against No. 8 seed Braxton Brown (Maryland) for the second time this weekend, working a takedown in sudden victory for the win.
Catka opened the morning with a tough 4-1 decision over No. 11 seed Hayden Filipovich (Purdue) to advance to his ninth-place final against Terrill. Catka waisted no time against the Spartan, collecting two takedowns and backs in the opening period before catching Terrill on his back in the second for the pin.

Barbosa was one of only seven wrestlers seeded outside the top four to advance to a respective championship semifinal bout across the conference.

"I loved the way be bounced back tonight," Goodale said. "We still lost a lot of close matches, but we also beat a lot of good guys and won a lot of close matches. This is the Big Ten Tournament, it's really, really hard. We got seven guys through and hopefully we'll have more tomorrow."
