James Leads After Shortened Opening Day of Mary Fossum Invite

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Senior Emily James is atop the leaderboard for Rutgers women's golf after the first day of the Mary Fossum Invitational. James fired off a one-under-par 71 in Sunday's opening round at the Forest Akers Golf Club.
With rain present throughout the day, play was suspended midway through the first round and resumed later in the afternoon. As a result, the tournament has been shortened to 36 holes, with the final round set for Monday morning.
"I thought the team played hard this morning when conditions were tough. They stuck to our game plan and mitigated their mistakes," said head coach Kari Williams. "After the rain delay, we came out a little flat and we just weren't as sharp as we needed to be to keep up with the field. Emily put together a great round and hit some nice shots today to pace the team. Tomorrow, we have to come out focused and ready to play from the first swing we take."
James was the only player in the 81-player field to come into the clubhouse under par, rolling in four birdies and 12 pars on Sunday. James closed her opening round with a birdie on the final hole to secure her under-par performance. She owns a one-stroke lead on Addison Kartusch (Bowling Green) and Rhianna Gooneratne (Delaware) with 18 holes to play.
The Scarlet Knights are fourth in the 15-team field with a 17-over-par 305, just seven strokes behind Delaware (+10). Host Michigan State is second (+13), while Central Michigan is third (+14).
Junior Joline Truong is inside the top 20 with her five-over-par 77, with her birdies on holes four and 14 helping her to sit tied for 18th. Classmate Judy Amano is tied for 27th, while senior Lorena Rossettin is tied for 34th. Redshirt senior Grace Lu rounded out the team scorecard tied for 42nd and is currently tied for second in par-three scoring (3.00).
