Damiere Shaw is in his sixth season at Rutgers and third as running backs coach in 2025. A Broyles Award nominee, Shaw was instrumental in the development of RB Kyle Monangai, who produced two of the top six rushing seasons by yards in the Rutgers record book and the two highest rushing seasons for RU in the Big Ten era. A native of Chester, Pennsylvania, Shaw previously coached RU wide receivers after joining the Scarlet Knights as the director of player development.
• Shaw was named a nominee for the 2024 Broyles Award as one of the top assistant coaches in the nation.
• Helping the Scarlet Knights to a second consecutive winning season and bowl berth in 2024, Rutgers averaged 28.9 points per game, the team’s best mark in the Big Ten era and most since 2008. The 376 points scored overall and 4,975 yards of total offense both marked the fourth-most season totals in program history, while the 293 first downs were second. In addition, RU converted on third down at a clip of 44 percent, the first time reaching 40 percent since 2008.
• Rutgers rushed for 2,279 yards, its best total in the Big Ten era, most since 2007 and 10th-highest mark for a season in program history. The 175.3 rushing yards per game ranked third in the Big Ten for the team's best placement since joining the league.
• Monangai became the first Scarlet Knight to earn First Team All-Big Ten on offense in both the coaches and media votes after rushing for 1,279 yards, second-most in the conference. Later named Fourth Team All-America by
Phil Steele, he finished his career with the second-most career rushing yards (3,221) in program history and ranks third with 14 100-yard rushing games, seventh with 3,473 all-purpose yards and seventh with 27 rushing touchdowns. He was selected in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears.
• Overall, the running back position group had no fumbles for the season, as RB Antwan Raymond scored eight rushing touchdowns, the most in a season for a Rutgers true freshman in program history and second-most among Power Four true freshmen. He totaled 457 rushing yards overall to lead all Big Ten true freshmen and rank fifth among Power Four players in his class in 2024.
• Shaw took over as running backs coach in 2023 and helped mentor Monangai to a Big Ten-best 1,262 rushing yards. The Scarlet Knights were the most improved team in the Big Ten by total offense (+24.1) on the way to securing the program’s first winning season since 2014 and a victory in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl.
• Rutgers averaged 168.7 rushing yards per game (fifth in the Big Ten), improving by 40.5 rushing yards per game compared to 2022. That included four games with at least 250 rushing yards, matching the number of such games the previous six seasons combined (70 games). The Scarlet Knights had six games with at least 200 rushing yards, the most in a season since 2007.
• Monangai earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors after recording seven 100-yard games, including 159 versus No. 1/3 Ohio State, the second most ever for a Scarlet Knight against a ranked opponent. He graded as the top running back in the Big Ten, best in the Power 5 and No. 5 nationally by
Pro Football Focus, forcing 73 missed tackles to lead the conference.
• Shaw was elevated to wide receivers coach prior to spring practice in 2022. WR Sean Ryan led the Big Ten with 16.9 yards per reception that season and signed with the Baltimore Ravens.
• Shaw was selected as a member of the 2022
247Sports 30Under30 list, which identifies 30 rising stars in the coaching and personnel space under the age of 30.
• Shaw joined the Scarlet Knights in 2020, spearheading initiatives as the director of player development in preparing student-athletes for personal, academic and athletic success. That included the creation of Chop4Change to spread a message of unity and equality amidst the national social justice discussion, while registering every student-athlete on the team to vote in the 2020 election. The program continues to be a staple of Rutgers football.
• Shaw was hired as assistant wide receivers coach for the Carolina Panthers in the winter of 2020 before joining the Scarlet Knights.
• As the wide receivers coach at Fordham in 2019, Shaw mentored three wideouts to over 600 receiving yards, the only team in the Patriot League to achieve the feat. That included rookie WR DeQuece Carter, who broke the school record for receptions (53) and receiving yards (723) by a freshman. Overall, the Rams paced the conference in total offense and scoring offense, placing second in passing offense.
• Shaw spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons as an offensive quality control coach at Baylor. The job included assisting with coaching the wide receivers, identifying opposing team’s coverages and personnel tendencies on game day, and breaking down opposing team’s game film during the week. Shaw helped develop WR Jalen Hurd, a third-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers and the 2018 Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year. He also mentored WR Denzel Mims, a second-round pick of the New York Jets in 2020, who finished third in school history in touchdowns, fifth in receptions and sixth in receiving yards. The Bears won the 2018 Texas Bowl over Vanderbilt.
• Shaw worked one season as a graduate assistant coach for Temple in 2016, assisting with the wide receivers. The Owls won the American Athletic Conference championship that season.
• Shaw made the transition from player to coach following an injury as a freshman. He served as a student assistant focusing on wide receivers with the Owls for three seasons from 2013-15. During the tenure, Shaw worked closely with WR Robbie Chosen, who posted the second most receiving yards in program history, and WR Keith Kirkwood, both NFL receivers.
