Rutgers Captures Two Flight Championships at Eastern Championships

WEST POINT, NY - The Rutgers women's tennis team completed its first tournament of the fall season on Sunday, earning championships in three singles brackets and one doubles draw. Senior co-captain Carissa Sommerlad (Bradley Beach, NJ) won the No. 4 singles championship while junior Andrea Weckstein (Holmdel, NJ) captured the crown in the No. 3 singles bracket.
In an all Rutgers final round, Sommerlad, the top seed in the bracket, defeated teammate Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ), 6-3, 6-4, to capture the title. Weckstein, her bracket's third seed, beat fourth seeded Jen LaRusso of Connecticut, 6-4, 6-4, to earn the crown. Junior Kaitlin Link (Ontario/Toronto, Canada) won the No. 2 singles consolation title by beating New Hampshire's Hallie Erickson, 6-4, 6-2.
The doubles team of sophomore Helen Magomedova (Brooklyn, NY) and freshman Alina Balasa (East Brunsiwick, NJ) earned a second place showing in the tournament after losing a close match to the top seeded team of Megan Noble and Annie Collier of Army, 9-8 (4).
The Scarlet Knights will be back in action Sept. 26-28 when they travel to Princeton, NJ to compete in the Princeton Invitational.
