Air Force Downs Rutgers 6-1

RU’s lone point came at No. 6 singles where freshman Jill Markowitz (Forest Hills, NY) downed Jane McDonald, 6-0, 6-1. Air Force’s Laura Nigro defeated Andrea Weckstein (Holmdel, NJ) at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Senior Jennifer Hellier (Annapolis, MD) also took her opponent to three sets before falling, 5-7, 7-5, 6-1, to Heather Shelby. Kate Bushey beat RU’s Carissa Sommerlad (Bradley Beach, NJ), 6-4, 6-3. Freshman Alina Balasa (East Brunswick, NJ) fell to Gina Black, 6-2, 7-5. Junior Kaitlin Link (Ontario, Canada) lost her match at No. 5 singles to Katie Tomkie, 6-1, 7-6 (3).
Rutgers earned one victory in doubles action on Saturday. Link and Balasa defeated Tomkie and McDonald, 8-4 at No. 3 doubles. Hellier and freshman Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ) lost to Shelby and Bushey, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles. At No. 1 doubles it was Nigro and Black taking the win over Sommerlad and Weckstein, 8-3.
The women will be back in action tomorrow at 9 a.m. when they face Army.
