Rutgers Drops BIG EAST Match to Virginia Tech 6-1

The Hokies beat the Scarlet Knights in all three doubles matches, while notching wins in five of six singles matches.
RU’s lone win in singles competition came at No. 4 singles with Alina Balasa (East Brunswick, NJ) defeating Ginger Lowdermilk, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2. At No. 1, it was Virginia Tech’s Kristen Stubbs taking the win over Andrea Weckstein (Holmdel, NJ), 6-1, 6-3. Senior Jennifer Hellier (Annapolis, MD) put up a fight at No. 2 singles before falling to Carolyn Kramer, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. Senior Carissa Sommerlad (Bradley Beach, NJ) lost at the No. 3 position to Elissa Kinard, 6-3, 6-2. At No. 6, it was VT’s Felice Lam picking up the win over Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ), 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles play, Weckstein and Sommerlad lost to Kramer and Kinard, 8-2, at the No.1 position, while Hellier and Shmakova fell at No. 2, 8-2, to Stubbs and Lowdermilk of Virginia Tech. Kaitlin Link (Ontario, Canada) and Balasa lost to Zdenka Videnova and Lam, 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
The Scarlet Knights will be back on Sunday, hosting Binghamton in a non-conference match at the Busch Tennis Bubble at 10 a.m.
